S3TC Texture download

Post by gopostal » Sat Dec 06, 2008 11:11 am

OK, guys. This is a *must have* if you value your UT time. Herm has put many hours and much effort into getting this to work so without further fanfare I would like to make available...
[dah.. dah..DAH!!!]
S3TC Super Cool Texture Pack

It's a hefty download, and it's compressed greatly so expect it to take a little time. The files are compressed with 7zip, which can be opened by winzip, winrar, or the free 7zip utility.

Get the file, follow the instructions in the readme, and expect to enjoy UT in ways you never imagined.

Herm was a real soldier over this so it would be nice if you post back afterwards and let him know what you think.

I did as stated, but I had to reboot to get the patch to work. Anyways, the only question is that the speed has changed. I swear that everything has sped up like we are all on a jolt keger party. Any ideas about how to fix the speed?

The movement of the person and the weapons has changed.

Nothing on your system folder is altered, its all textures with the exception of openGL.

You might try pulling your ut.ini and letting the game make you a new one (remember to switch back to openGL). If that helps, compare the two and see what has changed. If you find the offender, let us know and I'll add a note.

I did as you stated and it does the same. I need to make a correction or clarify about my statement in the game speed. It only does that in practice mode, so far that I have discovered. When I go onto a server game, it is OK.

No no laptop for me. I built my computer. Here are some specs.

I also have an ATI Radeon HD2600 XT Video card. It is good card, but wanted to see the great effort that Herm has done for the textures. But most likely I will put things they way they were and just use hardware/video card for the video.

I thought it might have something to do with the dual core, but I have the AMD Dual core optimizer already installed so I can play older games as UT.

Powersaver throws UT off because it steps processor speed up and down. This throws the clock off inside UT and makes it run faster. It runs normal from a server because the server tick rate keeps it in check.

Try turning off any power-down features like power management, try a new ut.ini and see. I'm betting the processor is adjusting its speed and that is whats messing the game up.

BTW, your jpeg is photoshopped

I did delete the old ut.ini but it did not work fix the speed issue. Well I brought my UT back to the way I had it, using the video card option. The game speed is normal and all is well. Yes the jpeg is photoshoped, just where the it shows who the computer is registered to is. I did not need to have Herm see that CHUCK NORRIS  gave me his computer. He might get jealous. lol

Man, I'm sorry about that David. It's really a shame because they are quite good. I wish I knew the issue. Just out of curiosity, could you try to run under openGL as you sit now and see if it still has issues?

I was just joking you about the mycomputer pic. It was pretty obvious what was altered.

Well I ran it as openGL and the speed was off again. It ran fast. So I switched it back to Direct 3D and it ran fine.

Hmmm?

Post by Hermskii » Sat Dec 06, 2008 11:06 pm

Hmmm? Interesting. Try this then:

Make a copy of your entire UT folder and by the way is it in the default location of C:\UnrealTournament ? If so, copy the whole folder somehwre else and reinstall everything from the ground up and do not copy anything from your copied or original install. Now do the fix and tell us if it is still fast or off somehow. If it is, just nuke the new folder that the new install made and replace it with the back up. That will put you right back to where you are now. Before all of that please tell us what your power saver scheme is set to now. Try to set it to always on and see if that doesn't clear up your speed issue.

This fix does not effect anything that controls speed. Your problem makes zero sense to me and no matter what, right now, I 'm thinking there is a problem with your installation. Maybe I'm wrong but I doubt it. Let us know David.

I then changed the power scheme to always on instead of home/office. I then, just for curiosity went back to the setting/preferences and switched back to the original OpenGL settings and it was still fast. I do appreciate all your help, but I will stick with the video setting settings that my card will give me. Thank you guys again.

OK

Post by Hermskii » Sun Dec 07, 2008 12:06 am

Ok, I just replied to your PM and you had done what I asked and set it to "always on" and the issue still happened. I'm stumped right now. I haven't seen this issue with anyone before AND like I said, it makes no sense at all being all this fix does is tell your video card to use one set of textures rather than another. It doesn't say to speed up your processor or anything like that. It doesn't effect your Windows XP operating system. It doesn't effect how hard your video card works. Nothing. I'm stumped and will consider the possibilities.

Thanks for trying.

Herm, you are probably well aware of this, but in case others are reading this I'll take a moment and explain why we are questioning power saving.

There is a known bug with UT that can create problems if you install the game on a newer computer while it has power saving turned on (mostly with laptops although I myself had this problem on a new tower once). Power saving causes the computer's processor to actually change speeds as it is needed, "stepping" up and down as required by stress on resources. When you install UT it polls the processor and at that moment it takes the speed the processor is running and makes it's internal game clock match that. Later, if the processor speed changes, this conflicts with the established clock rate and game speeds are off. Most of the time it seems to the player like the game is running super-fast. Generally this can be reset by dumping the ut.ini and the user.ini but sometimes a reinstall (with power saving disabled) is needed to clear the trouble.

Whew. OK now you know why. If you are still chasing this David, you can look at this too:
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?p=2211992

I don't mean to keep flaying this if you have moved on. It's kind of in my nature to keep at a problem until I can solve it.
