Spiking pings question

Post by 5i1ent/3ob » Tue Feb 17, 2009 8:20 pm

Can anyone explain to me why one's ping would vary back and forth as much as 250 points, say anywhere from 250 - 500 back and forth? Also, is there an explanation as to why when a player with a highly erratic ping such as exampled above would cause the server to become 'laggy'? Thanks in advance,

I think if someone is laggy the Server ping will also be more laggy but, you won't have much problems with the lag if you just keep playing..
I don't think you'll feel much difference.

Maybe Im wrong because I don't know much about this!

Laggy players can lag a server because the code has built in "wait for client" settings. These have a very small time period and if they are exceeded the server simply ignores the client for that particular thing. However if you have someone with really bad ping who is constantly making the server wait on them to update, all those little pauses can add up and be noticeable to everyone. That's kind of a short and dirty answer but you get the idea.
