Knowing the maps

Post by 5i1ent/3ob » Thu May 07, 2009 2:52 pm

Right or wrong I still maintain that the biggest edge one can have in the game is to know the maps. Learning a map is usually a process of trial and error, but it doesn't have to be. Many of the maps on Hook's excellent server are bot-less and if you go in there late at night by your lonesome you can learn a lot just by digging.
Of course digging in real time doesn't usually yield a maps best secrets, but that's what UT Editor is for! Go into Unreal Ed and use "open file" to bring in any map you want. Then you can see the map from any angle, see all the secrets and even do 3-D fly by's of every inch of the map. You can see the structure with or without skin, with or without lights...no detail remains hidden. There is a TON you can learn about a map by viewing it in UT Ed.
I remember one night MEAT and I spent a good hour or so in one map just trying to get to spots and looking for the secrets. As good as MEAT is, if he still does these things they must be important, so learn the maps:)

Edit - AH crud, I thought I was posting this on the tail end of the "Spill the Beans" thread. Would you be so kind as to relocate this post for me Hermskii?

SilentBob nailed it right on the head...your better players know there maps. I use to spent hours
exploring maps and I still do. Like SB said angles/corners are very important.
Better players know maps in and out...for example if a better player spawns in a corner of a room in a building in a
city map...he will know where he is in relation to that map and possibly know where you are in that map.
A better player knows where to hide, they know spawn points and good players know how to keep secrets.
However players today are somewhat lazy...hence me telling secrets to everyone in hopes they get better... :|

I totally agree with MEAT - Silent Bob did hit it right on the head!
I have found things in the editor that it would take quite a while to find even poking around in the map.
Like the holes in the floor of DM-[JAG]THEWORXV3a.
There are quite a few secrets to be found on this map.
Even some of the stock maps have secrets that some I have just found out lately! :P

I agree with Hook who agrees with MEAT who agrees with Silent Bob that knowing the maps is a huge advantage in UT. Silent Bob hit the nail on the head with that statement.

Learning the maps is Rule #1. This is clearly stated in The Jargonaut's excellent "Redeemer University" type thread he posted long ago. I'm pretty sure a link to it is kicking around here someplace. It is a "must read" IMHO.
You must have an accurate mental picture of the entire map in your head in order to win consistently. This way you will know exactly where you are when you respawn, and where the guy who just got you is likely to be now. You will maximize your chances of early escape from the "loop of poop" on the spray maps by knowing each and every map by heart. YES, it takes time to learn them all.
Btw a faster way to snoop for secret areas is to start up the map in practice match, and then go into "ghost" mode and fly around and through the map. U-ed will show you the triggers and such to open those secret doors, but you have to know all of the symbols U-ed uses to understand what they are showing you.
I'm a man........but I can change........if I have to........I guess

Klownz never remembers the map that well. Klownz Rule #1 is know the player your playing. Klownz will know what a particular player is going to do before the player knows it. Klownz learns the player and not the map . . . . .
Evil is obvious only in retrospect.

I'm learning fast:

If you don't know where HellFire is, look behind you and dodge.
If you don't know where Ice is, keep looking.
If you don't know where Supreme is, don't worry, he'll find you.
If you don't know where BIOMECH is, your standing on what's left of him.

It seems every time I fight you, Ice shoots me in the back.
And whenever I fight Ice, you shoot me in the back.

Sometimes I see both of you at the same time, and Scify shoots me in the back.
