Hurricane IKE...

OK folks, many of you know we have what may be the worst hurricane to hit Houston since 1983 making a B-line for just southwest of Houston. That puts the dirty side of the storm which is the bad part right on Houston.

The streets are already jammed with evacuees trying to get out of town and my wife and kids are already gone. I'm going to stay to try to ride it out and manage our house and property. I live about 35 miles from Galveston which is an island right on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. 100+mph winds are supposed to tear everything up around here and flooding is eminent. I do live in a low lying area but I LOVE A GOOD STORM. I'm staying no matter what unless we get a mandatory evacuation order.

I'm telling you all of this because I heard this morning on the news that they expect a total power outage for the entire city of Houston. Some speculate that 50% of all electricity lines and telephone polls will be broken by late Saturday. My UPS which powers the servers in case of power failure will only hold the load for about 30 minutes. It is expected that power will be out in portions of Houston for up to 18 days. If you can't do the math, I'll just say it. There is a better than average chance that the servers will go down late Friday night on September 12, 2008 and stay down for several days if not weeks.

I'll get the servers back on line as soon as I can if my house survives at all including the servers and everything I own. Twisters are a concern as well and we don't have basements in Houston. If for any odd reason I die for being stupid enough to stay here, I just want you all to know that it has been a real pleasure for me over the years to get to know a great many of you. This hobby has brought me more joy than you know and it would not have been possible without your interest and support. So thank you very much. If I die, somebody better get a server up again as soon as possible with the MHM name and mantra of good sportsmanship. That goes for a CG server as well.

I don't expect to die and in fact I'm really looking forward to this storm "so far." When the servers do go down and if they don't come back up and if the forum dies, please pick up where it left off at www.redeemerinsanity.com (save it to your favorites) or maybe Hook's place. You will probably lose power but i feel you will be fine.

It's really funny that every one is evacuating. The only real damage and flooding that happened in Louisiana was because that levee broke.

Are people all clogging the freeways and running out of gas again Herm?
Are they spazzing out and running a muck on the roads panicking again?
God what a bunch of fools.

I'm glad your weathering it , i did last time and hardly got any wind or rain at all.
Besides the minute the hurricane hits land the thing pitters out and dies.

100mph winds. We've made it through that before.
Just put some ply wood over the windows and your golden!

To bad the redirect will be down if the power goes i could have put my server on.

You either leave a head of time or you weather the storm.

Herm will be chillin on his couch watching the news the whole time, And trying to occupy his restless childrens.

Kids and wife are long gone already up to Fort Worth with Grandma and Great Grandma. I am home alone. Yes, there will be much time spent watching TV on the couch at least until the power cuts out. That will happen first. Then some windows will get blown out. Then the waters will come and flood the house. That is about as bad as I expect it to get. I'll be fine and happy to be here in a good storm!
