A little mini guide to by latest install

Post by Dr.Flay » Mon Jan 20, 2014 1:02 am

I made some notes as I installed my recent copy, so I thought I'd post here (I may well use it again anyway).

This is on a modern multi-core CPU with Windows 7.
I set the Windows power profile to "Maximum Performance" so the CPU was at full speed throughout the main install.
CD1 and 2
copy DE from CD1
BP1-fix
BP4
BP4-fix
AdvancedModelSupport
Chaos updates
Rocket Arena updates

EAX patch
*UT patch 451b would go here, or anywhere before here.
OMP update
*fix int files
DX10 renderer
*Run and basic renderer config
Update Masterserver info
ut-marginally_enhanced-100.zip
UnrealXP110
XBrowser
Xconsole
Xmaps
Hi-res textures
Then I start doing things like adding extra lines to the main configs, and any mutators and Game Types I want to show in the advanced options window.
http://www.ut99.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3625
This tweak is very useful for server admin, who cannot restart UT without a good reason.

If you were running a server

I'd like to try this with your guidance. I'll need many details and links to thinks you mentioned here. Also this would be a great topic to put in your section here. Call it something like "My latest tweaked install" or something like that...

I will post my process soon too but I think it has pretty much stayed the same as what is in my manual except now there are S3TC high res textures.

That reminds me. When a texture of a vine hanging or cables hanging down from something is used, the texture background is all black instead of clear. Anybody know which texture I need to restore from CD1.

There is an answer to you Black Background issue on my forum somewhere

I just found this over at Unreal Mayhem - may help? ...
Black box while using zoom ...

If you zoom in a sniper rifle and you see a black box thats blocks your view... you must do the following:

type preferences into the console....

select rendering....

select which render you are using: open GL d3d or d3d9

Under that tab you will see an option: HighDetailActors..... that setting must be set to TRUE. If its set to false you'll get that black box on your rifle when you use the scope.
Click the link below to see a picture if your confused still on how to find it... can't figure out how to make it show the picture in this post...... :/

I will give it a try HOOK but I'm pretty sure it is an actual texture called vines or something like that. I'll try it though and let you know.

Now To Doc...

I have tons of questions about the files you have used here. let us start with this one. What is BP1 fix? What is fixed about them and where can I get them. pretend I'll ask you where to get each of all of these files because I will be asking it to be honest.

Lots more questions will come too. I have to admit, I'm a little excited about this trial run.

B%$£ F@^&*?

Excuse my language, but I just lost my post as the browser locked-up.

So a shorter version;

I was testing the list I made at Hooks place;
http://hooksutplace.freeforums.org/unre ... -f104.html

Bonus Pack 1-fix, adds custom skin support for Nali and War-Cows
http://web.archive.org/web/201101051516 ... fixes.html
Bonus Pack 4-fix, adds custom skin support for WarBoss and Xan Mk.2
http://www.pseudorandom.co.uk/2001/paradox/bonuspack4/

Ignoring all known advice, and flying in the face of common-sense, I installed the complete CD2, and just replaced the DE mutator from CD1.
I knew I was going to replace the textures with the Hi-Res versions.
So far I have seen a few specific custom bots skate or freeze on death.
None of the default bots ever do it :D , so I suspect this is likely to be a missing anim, or the CD2 issue is also in a few custom bot textures :(

I'll make a list of those, so they can be examined, and tested by others.

I also included patch 451 as this install will not be used for editing.
The fixes in the OldUnreal renderer int files, are a simple removal of an extra " (guys like you will spot it, if you open the int files)

So if I'm right here the directions for the Bonus Packs should say to install the Bonus Pack first and then install the BPFix for that bonus pack right?

If like me you start with a GOTY edition, you only need the Christmas BP4.
The fix can be done any-time after, but it makes sense to do it then so you don't forget.
If I had the 1 CD version, I would probably install all 4 bonus packs first, then the 2 fixes.
This is only because I keep the BP fixes in my main patches folder.
Advanced Model Support and those 2 fixes seem to belong together.

If I re-host the files I may add the fixes in the RARs (same as I did with the Chaos fix in the full Xpickups distro.)

I've been thinking about the other model/skin fixes available, but I stuck to posting about those fixes for official content.

There are fixes for 6Abbey and 6Marine, but I haven't done them yet (I will).
I doubt I will use the sex-voice fix, as I consider it a hack, and it only fixes bots built around the wrong sex.
Also I use FerbotZ, which generates me random bots from random models, skins and voices. If the bots can use any voice, it often sounds stupid (though sometimes funny).

BTW. the list in the first post is literally what I wrote in notepad while installing, and not "instructions" as such.
I would have written more about certain bits.

The only thing I ever install from Bonus Pack 2 are the maps.
Forget about that de.u file!

No no no no no. Let's make a list. let's make it right here with details and everything. We may even have to make one for the retail install and then one for the Goty install. All of my stuff is based on retail 2cd install. You have already opened more cans of questions than you know. Example. You sai if I had goty you would just install BP 4. Are you saying that goty already has the other bp fixes you mentioned?

I'd like to make a great install guide here based on what you think. My install is just basic. yours will be cool I suspect. I know no matter what it will get very hard to follow when we get to OpenGL renderers AND high Res textures.

OMG! I just now went to and actually paid attention while looking over this site:

http://liandri.beyondunreal.com/Unreal_Tournament

How awesome is that place! I've passed through this page a few times in the past but never knew it was so concise and perfect! What a great piece of work it is. yes, yes! This is the model we should from. I already see I don't need BP 1, 2 and 3 if I do a GOTY install for instance. Hmmm!

By the way HOOK my settings were already set to true for the HighDetailActor. Here is a picture that shows it I hope:
Shot0000.jpg
Shot0001.jpg
See how the texture is a flat square and the web or vine growth is supposed to be hanging there and the black part is supposed to be clear but it is black. this is my only issue with my latest S3TC install and I hate it man! this isn't a texture issue either as far as a certain texture goes. This is how clear is seen when used in a texture in OpenGL. Hey! It's like I know what I'm talking about! I think it is a maskinghack or a transparency setting. tell me!

First remember this topic is not a normal general "guide", it is a testing-ground.

...also now you see there is good reason I send people to the Liandri archive
It is the replacement for the old Beyond Unreal downloads page.
Since no-one has fixed the old downloads, people have been updating the wiki instead.
Seems to work well, but not everyone can use the Gamefront links.

During install of a GOTY edition, yes you can specifically ignore the DE mutator, but I decided to tick all the boxes so it would be equal to someone that has used all the bonus packs, or does not know any better.
BTW. I have only ever used BP4 as I have always had a GOTY edition.

I notice you copied the DE mutator twice. Is it also in BP1 ?
Perhaps I should actually download them and look inside.

Chaos and RA can be installed at any time.

The EAX patch must be installed after the 436 but before 451, as it looks for the version info of the Galaxy renderer and 451 is newer.
Next the OMP pack, as it has new config files that the patches would reset backwards.
I then removed the extra " from the new audio renderer INT files.
While I was dealing with the renderers, I thought it was a good point to add the DX10 renderer.

With all the renderers in, I ran UEd and opened the advanced options window.
After changing the renderers and settings I wanted, UT got it's first run.

No. There is a different version of DE in bonus pack two which causes a major file mismatch error since all servers use the one that either comes in the game or in BP1. Oddly, I just searched the original CD and BP1 and don't find the de file on it but I am sure the de file from cd 2 is bad.
