Sound fix?

Post by Hermskii » Sat Jul 19, 2014 9:18 pm

A while back I found the fix but forgot it. i need help finding it again. Sometimes when I start up my ut to play the sound is scratchy and broken so badly that I have to reboot or not play. Usually a reboot fixes it and sometimes it doesn't.

I don't recall what the fix was but I'm guessing it was a sound setting change in windows sound or and more likely, maybe I edited something in the sound drivers or told UT to use a different one. i don't recall is the main point and I have rebuilt my PC...so what ever the fix was is gone.

I recall it was a super easy fix. Anyone? Any ideas? I have already searched here but there are just too many results.

Solution is to go into Unrealtournament.ini file and locate the galaxy audio driver section and increase the latency from 40 to 70. Done!

*ahem*
Or decrease the latency, depending on your soundcard.
Increasing the latency on mine makes it sound terrible.

I'm afraid this is not a 1-size-fits-all solution.
My last sound-chip had a latency of 10ms.

You have to sort of match the cycles/buffer size your card has, or multiple of that value (which is why larger values work).
eg. a card with a 10ms latency will also work at 20 and 30ms.

You have hit close to or bang on one of the multiples. You could try half that value and it should also be close to what you need.

Some soundcards have HW memory built in, and some use your RAM. Some software will always rely on software buffers (your RAM), in case you do not have HW buffers.
Software buffers can be whatever size the programmer decided :(
All these factors will vary the speed/delay at which the audio chain works at.

NOTE: Some people have found that using the official Creative EAX patched version gave them scratchy audio, and the solution was to use the Creative OpenAL windows driver, rather than the one packaged with your drivers.

I have to admit that I laughed loudly at that "*ahem*"

I want to say that what you wrote is nearly exactly what I meant to write. LOL.
