What is the program that lets you assign your server name to it so that people can find your server by its name no matter what the ip address is.?

I'm trying to get rid of the static IP for my servers yet still have it so that people never have to re-add any of the servers to their favorites because the server ip has changed.

Anybody have any idea. I thought is was called something simple like opendns or something like that. I recall I tried to use it before and failed. I'm much better with networking now.

I think I found an old link. It may have been called DynDNS. It seems they charge for this service now.

DNS - depending on what are you using...
Some free DNS services (as I'm currently using) have their own domain and will have a sub-domain. In order to update your host-name they have their own application - not a common one.
DuckDns by example are using even sheduled scripts or an application.
NOIP also have their application (but scripting is not impossible).
Others probably are using only sheduled VBS scripts.
Others have their own custom instructions in updating IP (log into some account and manually updating IP).

I'm presuming that I understood your question. For usage of other domain (not their specified recommended free sub-domain), I think all are asking money. You have to see which is cheapest VS Best.

Thanks for the info. I am still very weak when it comes to this stuff. My physical networking knowledge is good but the rest is week.

Often this is done for you by the service you host or register with.
Most ISPs have their own DNS (which I avoid).

I have not tried to contact anyone yet. Way too many other life related things to do first.
