Laptop Help

Post by David » Fri Nov 26, 2010 6:24 pm

I am wanting to replace my wife's laptop. It has been damaged for some now and she has been a good sport about it.

I have spoken with Herm about one and he offered some good advise. So I "upgraded" from what I was originally looking at. Price is an issue, but I might be able to stretch to cover this.

What are your thoughts?

This one is what I was looking at first. I liked the price better as well. :?

I just thought that it might be good to list what my wife would need a laptop for. She uses for web surfing, Facebook and its' games, Office 2007, listens to music, sims.... and stuff like that . Nothing too demanding.

You know, I should have asked you what she was using it for. Go with the first one you showed me. Buy yourself the good one later.

Well, the one sell on the less expensive one is no longer going. But I had reservations on the other, due to the screen size of 14" and the price. I think for the price that they are asking, there should be a bigger screen.

Anyways, after talking with the wife, we decided to hold and wait. What I would like to do is pay off some bills with the tax return (if there is a tax return this year. Heaven only knows I paid more than my fair share; on purpose so I can get a return). Anyways, pay off the bills with the return and with the remaining return buy my wife a nice laptop and have it paid off as well.

Why can't I win the lottery?......Anyways, my wife is a good sport. When it comes time, hopefully I will be able to get her a good solid laptop and I will post the specs here.

Spoke with my wife about my idea of waiting until tax return befre buying the laptop. I showed her what I would like to get her. It is still $$$$ but if I get my return like I should, I should have enough to pay off my bills and buy this laptop. Here is the specs.

That Laptop you picked out can do a lot more than what you mentioned above, this can run very detailed games and just about any software out there....you sure you need something so ellaborate? Just the I7 chip is around $300 in itself, I got my hp compaq amost 2 years ago for under 500 at best buy, took it to kuwait, survived the desert installed windows 64bit ultimate edition($10 in kuwait) unlimited installs :D and its still running great today.!

Which one? The AMD dual core, the i5, or i7? I know the i7 is more than I need, and maybe the i5 might be more than I need, but I wanted something that she can grow into.

David I bought the $340 bottom rung laptop at wallyworld for my daughter. (not the netbooks, this is the low end real laptop) I'm pleasantly surprised at what it will do. Windows 7 is very stable and fast and not a resource hog. If she isn't going to "game" then I can see no reason to invest another 300 or more to get a powerful one.

Well...... :? After disappointing my wife, for "raising her hopes" for a new laptop, I got her this laptop, the i7 one. The only thing I changed was I got a blu-ray disk. It is an 18.4" screen.

Here are the written specs. Satellite P500-BT2G23 Laptop
Intel® Core™ i7-740QM processor (1.73 GHz (2.93 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology), 6MB Cache, Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 8GB DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM (4096MBx2), 500GB HDD (7200rpm, Serial-ATA), NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M with 1GB GDDR3 discrete graphics, Blu-ray Disc™ ROM with SuperMulti DVD±R/RW Double Layer drive, Glossy Black US LED Backlight Keyboard, Microsoft® Office 2010 Starter, Norton Internet Security Suite (NIS) 2011 (30-day trial), 3 Years Standard Limited Warranty
PSPGSUTCU3G3

I got the 3 year warranty on the thing so when karma kicks me, hopefully it will be before 3 years. Herm knows my luck.

My wife's argument/statement before being depressed was since I was going to pay off the debt with the income tax return, why not get it now while it is on "sale". I can still pay off the debt when the income tax returns comes around........... I just know that I will be signing up for any overtime that i can get my hands on... Life was easier when I was single. But My wife and kids are worth more than my easy life.

P.S. I am not bragging about anything I bought/got. I know not to because Karma and know each other well enough. Anyway, I was trying to get feedback. I like to thanks those who offered me feedback/guidance. Thank you. Hopefully this laptop last for YEARS and then more.

I am normally a person who buys used items and then upgrade the hard drive, memory and what I am able to. Anyway, I hope that this works for my wife.

No Dave you bought a great system, and I also do that little "lets buy now while its on sale trick to my wife sometimes too" worked on my 47" lol but hasn't worked much after that. You do have a great pc that will last and is capable of doing a lot, you could run multiple instances of UT ;) and still be lag free for life!

Well the new laptop came........
I do not have much experience with Windows 7 so it was learn as I go as I set up the system and made it ready for the wife. She enjoys it. That is all that matters.

After I got the laptop where she can load up her games with some help by me, I then turned it over to her while I formatted and put a fresh copy of windows xp on her old laptop and my "juke box" laptop. I switched out their hard drives, I needed the larger one for the juke box. Anyways, talking about a long day. Work in the morning, come home and format and fresh installs of windows on two laptops and download all the updates, Anyways... my plan is to sell my wife's old laptop on eBay.

It works except for the onboard sound and the lid is cracked where the hinges are making the lid loose. Everything else is good, working system, good memory, good processor, good wireless, dvd rom drive.... Here is the specs.
