My puppy chews up everything!

Hey folks,

I got a 6 month old Beagle which I named Buddy. He chews up everything. Before I start to abuse him, do any of you have any suggestions. He's 25lbs now nearly a full grown Beagle. We have plenty of chew toys and raw hides for him but he prefers anything else that is on the ground, in reach or isn't specifically designed to be chewed on. My children will miss Buddy when I kill him so please give me some advice. Thanks!

On a real note, I'd never actually hurt my dog but I do want suggestions. He is an awesome dawg that just chews too much stuff up.

One thing about dogs - this is fairly normal when they are young - especially Beagles.
I am sorry, but I cannot remember what we did with our dogs.
Usually means that they are bored is what I have heard.
Dogs basically WANT to do good for there masters - let him know you mean business.
One way to show that YOU are the Master and "Alpha-Male" is to firmly turn the dog over on its back and bite his neck area! (not real hard, but enough to let him know who is boss)

Is anyone home when your dog starts to chew things?
Is your dog free to roam every room in the house?
How playful are you with the dog? (tug of war)
I've had a few labradors over the years and it always boiled
down to giving the dog attention...(they get bored like everyone else).
And those that spent a lot of time alone usually chewed/destroyed more.
Plus with chewing it only happened when the dogs were young... maybe teething?
Also we would train our dogs for hunting...so we never played "tug of war" with the dogs.
(Nothing is worse then a dog that won't give up a kill)

What MEAT and I said - "Bored" - I agree is usually the cause.
And pups get bored FAST!

Thanks all. I'm sure that being bored has a ton to do with it for sure but with my 2 boys around he still chews stuff up even while they are laying. Say they are playing with a power ranger figure and playing with Buddy the dog. As soon as Buddy can, he'll get that toy, run into another room and shred it down to slivers of plastic! LOL. True.

When we aren't here I understand boredom and his readtion. He has tons of chew toys for himself here but prefers my kids toys and anything left on the ground period. He has made us keep the place much better picked up.

What kind of doofus would get a dog that chews everything. Id just beat the dog until he stops. With a baseball bat or hammer.

Whatever you big cat lover. BTW. Dog #2 is at home with us now as of today. She awesome and my current Beagle is IN LOVE!
