Your opinion on BYU and Brandon Davies (basketball player)

Post by David » Fri Mar 04, 2011 4:50 pm

Brandon Davies suspended from BYU basketball team for honor code violation. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01742.html

I have an interest in what people think concerning the action taken towards Brandon Davies by BYU.

Before I give my thoughts, I just wish to state that I did not go to BYU nor do I think I could go to BYU. This is a question not about religion but of the honor code that he agreed to and do each year while at the school (from what I had read about it).

Here is the honor code posted on the BYU website.

Honor Code Statement
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men. . . . If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things (Thirteenth Article of Faith).

As a matter of personal commitment, faculty, administration, staff, and students of Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University—Hawaii, Brigham Young University—Idaho, and LDS Business College seek to demonstrate in daily living on and off campus those moral virtues encompassed in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and will

Be honest
Live a chaste and virtuous life
Obey the law and all campus policies
Use clean language
Respect others
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
Participate regularly in church services
Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code

Specific policies embodied in the Honor Code include (1) the Academic Honesty Policy, (2) the Dress and Grooming Standards, (3) the Residential Living Standards, and (4) the Continuing Student Ecclesiastical Endorsement. (Refer to institutional policies for more detailed information.)

My thought is I give props (proper respect) to both the school and the player, Brandon Davies.

I give props to the school for sticking to their rules for everybody, even a much needed star basketball player. They knew they will injure their chances this basketball season by suspending Brandon, but they did it because they stuck to their rules.

I give props to Brandon Davies as well since he was of character to come forward and admit his violation of the honor code to the school/team. It takes a big person to do this especially when so much is at risk for him by doing so.

What are your thoughts?

P.S. I am not a watcher of sports. I will watch a professional game every once and a while, but not college. I would rather play sports than watch them.

Let me get this straight. A long time ago, some people, (owners) came together and decided to build a college. This college would be available to most students just as most other colleges. It would basically offer the same education as the others colleges. I think I have this right so far. The only difference being that the owners decided to try to make this school more appealing by setting up some simple rules that if followed by everyone would make it a place where you would want to go to school or have your kids go for their education. Simple rules that ensured everybody there shared your interest to be educated in a clean, safe, family friendly environment. This sounds like a pretty awesome concept! These founders were geniuses!

I heard the students had to sign off saying they would abide by the rules while they were there and meet the other standard requirements most colleges have and they'd be welcome to continue their education there. That sounds pretty straight forward and fair to me. Follow the rules and you're in and can stay in. Simple! Very simple.

Recently, a student there admittedly broke a rule that he had said he wouldn't break and he got in trouble for it. The punishment? He had a privilege revoked for a set amount of time. Banned from the basketball team for one year I think right? That is too bad but also totally expected being that he knew what he was doing when he broke the rules. The unexpected part was this: He admitted to what he had done. He admitted to breaking the rules. He showed honor by owning-up for his misdeed. This young man may have strayed off the high road for an instant but I think he has what it takes to get back on the right track again if he chooses to.

This all seems so familiar for some reason.

Well, the part about the school having rules and the guy breaking the rules and paying for it is familiar. The guy owning-up for what he had done is rare and not so familiar to me.

I can only imagine all of the awesome people coming out of this school. To set such high standards for themselves is amazing! You don't see too many schools like this out there anymore. Too bad for that. I think the world would be a better place if more people were held accountable like this young man was at this school.

Yeah! I think that school has a model concept! Genius I tell you! LOL. CYA and thanks for the topic David!
