Thats Good news!

A good place to start in restoring your connection is to blank out any IP addresses for your connection device. If theres a DHCP server running on the WiFi it will assign all that for you. If that works, you can then make the manual changes to your IP address as direct by the owner of the WiFi so you can host your games.

Also, misconfigured Proxy settings will kill your connection for sure. If there is no Proxy server in use, disable any proxy settings. Many trojans will mess with proxy settings to control your Internet connection.

Okay, talked with landlord and have internet access again...but I'm having a new issue.

I'm using Internet Explorer from 2 years ago. My computer has a C drive, which is where most everything runs, and an E drive, my old computer put in so I didn't lose everyhthing after my friend upgraded it. Internet Explorer on C drive got shredded by my virus problems but even though that's cleaned up not, it won't work and I can't install a new one because it won't let me. I can't uninstall the one that's on C because the system won't let me.

'tis an unhappy state of affairs in the lands of Denmark.

Internet Explorer on E is an old version, same one I had when I was running Windows '98. It can't do everything the more recent one can, like open any kind of tabs.

Help?

I don't want IE9, I'd have to upgrade to the next version of windows and I'm good with WinXP for now.

I've got the program that installs IE8 already. It's just I can't get rid of the broken one I have now and it won't let me install over it. I'm basically on a repetitive mobius loop here.

On a side note, Internet Explorer is part of the operative system so I strongly doubt you can totally get rid of it. Another reason for stop using it in the first place IMO.

Exactly what Potts said, I gave you the link for IE7 not 9, you need winodws 7 to run 9.

It's the weirdest thing. IE8 isn't on the Add/Remove list, I logically went there first. I only wish to remove IE8 so I can install it fresh.

As it happens, I've another problem. The problems with my internet browser being what they are, anytime I try to download anything it locks up and then the only way out is to Task Mananger 'end task'.

I'll try to download that stuff from the library next chance I get.

So, while my computer is running fine and I again have internet access...I'm still having some issues. Specifically with my broswer. I use Internet Explorer (yes some of us still like it) but the one I was running got shredded by the problems my computer was previously having. It doesn't work at all and this error message comes up whenever I try to bring it up.

I'll get back to that.

Fortunately the guy that upgraded my computer earlier this year incorporated my old hard drive into this new system so I didn't lose all of my old stuff. This includes the Internet Explorer that was over there...but it's an old version. They're both IE8 but this old one is from 2002. It doesn't have a lot of features the current version has. Like, it can't open multiple tabs in one window. A minor thing but significant to my internet usage.

Opening new tabs isn't even an option.

It turns out that this old version is ever so slightly connected to my current one, as the same error message pops up whenever I enter anything in the URL field.

After I hit OK, it opens 2 more windows. One is a complete blank and the other is where I wanted to go. I need to close the blank one pretty quick or the windows lock up and freeze. I apparently can only have 3 windows open at one time, sometimes only 2, or they lock and freeze. If I open anymore windows from this new one, they all lock and freeze.

I've used the Task Manager to shut down frozen windows more in the last 24 hours than in the last 2 years.

Same error message comes up if I'm opening a link from my favorites.

I can't update the broken version of IE8, believe me I've tried. I can't remove it either, it's not listed in the Add/Remove section of control panel. I can't delete it to then install a new one because IE8 is so integrated into Windows XP that even broken it's constantly connected to something or other that's actively running; even when I close everything it's still registering it's connected to something or other that's doing something.

This current restriction is intolerable.

Other lil' issues.

There's this little Gold Shield on my taskbar that wasn't there before. It may be a good thing but given everything else that's happened lately, I'm wary of it. It claims to be an automatic updater for existing Windows software. Maybe it is but if it isn't and I try it then I may well get screwed.

Not the fun way.

I can't seem to find out how to disable it either. As to general updaters, the actual Windows Updater isn't working...which lends to the notion that this little Gold Shield may've disabled it to tempt me to try it.

I hate to lend credit to the notion that a virus, even though my various Anti·Virus scanners say I'm clear now, has a thought process but when I did have a couple running rampant on my system, they disabled the ability to download any anti·virus software so it's not a wholly unusual concept.

On a final note, unlike most people I usually delete all temporary internet files anytime I get off the internet. I know this is unusual as I don't do it on just my system and I've friends that use computers more than I do that find it extremely annoying that I did it and they have to actually remember all of their login information to the various sites they goto. I got in the habit years ago, still think it's a good thing, and even if I don't do it everytime...I definitely do it at least once any day I've been online.

For the past couple weeks, there's been 2 files I can't delete from that folder...

...I've looked them up as best I can. They're tracking cookies. I've tried everything I can think of to delete them, from a lethal lil' DOS program I got back in the late 80's that if not used properly can literally wipe a hard drive clean from one command line to...well, a bunch of other stuff. They stubbornly refuse to go away.

The various virus scanning/system checking stuff (Malwarebytes, AVG, Rkill, Combofix) don't recognize them as viruses or anything else bad and have left them completely alone.

That's about it.

I am now entertaining suggestions.

I do have one trick up my sleeve... but its very brute force and scary... You thought Combofix was scary to use...
This other option could be similar to you administering anesthesia to yourself before an operation.

But lets try this first...

Go to piriform.com and download CCleaner.

Install and run it.
Step 1: Under the Cleaner TAB - Check everything execpt Clean free space. You can do the free space if you want but it will just take a long time to complete. Then click run Cleaner... After thats done go to step 2

Step 2: Click on Registry - Check every Box there and then click Scan for Issues... when the scan is done Click FiX selected issues.

Reboot when CCleaner is done.... Then see how things are....
CCleaner is the only known trusted Registry cleaner that I know of thats free. Others on here may know of other programs they like to use. I use a Full version of Registry Mechanic to clean PCs I work with.
As for windows updates and the shield.... I know what will fix windows updates corruption but that takes us back to the Dangerous Tool....

We may need to use it at last resort.

Out of the box ccleaner is very helpful. Make any changes and play with it and it will be destructive. Follow Sir Mandrake's to the letter OR ELSE!
