Re: Needs
HippyKat liked it very much he told me. He thinks that it will be the way of games in the future. It is pretty cool that you don't need a great computer or anything near one in order to enjoy these games since all of the hard disk space, processing, video rendering and all of the rest of it is done at their end instead of making you have a great system at your end. He could not tell a difference at all and now understands it is like terminal services in that you just see the results as you play rather than your system having to create the results. Their computers and servers do all of the work and you just get to see the results on your monitor in real time. Great idea.

Re: Needs
Kool! thanks Herm, all this batch of invites I had are gone but I should get more in the near future and we shoudn't be too far from open beta( hopefully in the next 3 months? we'll see. It is a good idea , I wish that they'd so something like this for the UT99 engine and make it a free browser based game paid for by advertising . I thinkl it'd do well, think about it, Any game mode you want to play, pick as server nearest to you and play !Of course, I doubt there would be redeemer servers

Re: Needs
I guess I don't get the premise behind this. How in the world could browser ports handle the load of a gameserver? As it is on cable, the browsers are dog slow because everyone is on them at the same times, while I can go online to a server and its much faster.
It would seem to me just a thinly veiled attempt at a browser exploit. Maybe not malicious, but I can guarantee you they will push ad stuff down your throat you don't know is there. History has borne this out.

Re: Needs
Yep, and HippyKat has a sweet system at home and he said he could not tell the difference between playing through a browser compared to playing the actual game locally on his PC. He did not tell me they put ads in the game but I agree in that who cares so long as they have permission. I too think it is a cool idea and feel it will be the way to go in the future except then what they'll do is charge a small fee and give you access to their entire library of games. Not a bad deal to be able to pay a little to play ANY game you want as long as you want without having to ever upgrade your system not including a faster internet connection.

Re: Needs
yea the advertising pays for it, thats why it's free for users and thas why you'll see the billboards in game, its a small price to pay for a free game is to see a bit of ads in the maps. Still in beta atm will be interesting to see how crazy it gets when it goes open beta! Should be fun!Hermskii wrote:Yep, and HippyKat has a sweet system at home and he said he could not tell the difference between playing through a browser compared to playing the actual game locally on his PC. And as for rebuilding I don't want that headache...lol
Plus computers are so cheap these days.
I guess I'll buy a basic setup...nothing special.
Only thing I worry about is running my server or playing
UT on a newer computer.
Is there something I need to look for or avoid?
Or who knows, I may give up UT and running a server.

Re: Needs
I'll nibble but I won't bite. Avoid eMachines. Go to a near by Best Buy. Buy the best thing you can get for $500 which will likely be a HP computer. Buy the extended warranty for another $100 and walk out with new powerfull PC for just under $700 after taxes. Copy over the server folder to it from your old PC using a thumb drive that holds 10 gigs that you also buy ay Best Buy. Launch.

Re: Needs
I'm sorry to hear about your loss, MEAT,
Scify has some great advice.
GeForce 9500GT 512MB DDR2 PCI Ex is definitely the key!
Kick A$$ video card with lots of RAM (I've seen 1+ GB video)
Best of luck and watch out - MEAT is about to get dangerous!

Re: Needs
www dot pricewatch dot com
is a great place to find hardware that matches other stuff you have.
Need a socket 775 motherboard that can handle pc3200 RAM?
You can narrow down your search and link over to vendors' sites and buy stuff for cheap!
I got a MoBo for $30 to go with the processors and RAM I already have.
Good luck and I hope you stay with us MEAT, your server is a great setup.
