The luck of the MEAT?

Post by Fuzz_Ball » Thu Jun 25, 2009 2:33 pm

So MEAT and I were at Hook's CMM last night and as usual MEAT dominated.
There is one circular arena where you are stuck in a cell with only 2 holes from which to guide missiles.
It's really hit or miss as to who is in one of these cells so I consider it a level playing field.
A few players came and left as they were quickly shell-shocked by the madness!
Like everyone in the match, MEAT was stuck in one of theses cells and fair game.
I was feeling sorry for Hook as he seemed to be the only player I was hitting.
Why was it that I never found MEAT in his cell? Luck?
Tell us MEAT, how can I get to the point where I can yell "you're gonna die klown!"?

The map is called Redeemer Fun I believe.
A lot of players do NOT like this map and Bots do NOT work in it at all!
But, I don't mind playing it with real players once in awhile.
Well, that map is quite hit-and-miss.
There are about a dozen cells so hitting one with someone in it is quite iffy.
Some of the cells are also much easier than others, because of where they are in relation to yourself.
If a cell is on either side of you, they are easy to sneak into fast and blow the occupant to next week.
And blowing yourself to powder in YOUR own cell is also quite easy LOL. :P

Write this down:
The "secret" to that map (RedeemerFun) or the reason why I could find you and you could
not kill me is simple...I watch/listen for missiles. If a missile is flying it had to come from
somewhere. All I did was trace it back to the source. And if I noticed a missile headed in my
direction I would blow it up...that's it...
And as for Hook getting killed more times then you...well you had that defensive one spray
one guide/blowup technique going on and Hook didn't. Made it easy to find him.

Well, actually, THAT was me I believe! - I would shoot one out to keep missiles away on the other side while I guided one out.
BUT, I kept killing MYSELF over and over - that is my general downfall when I play redeemer!
That is why I had so many deaths I think. :P

I think in the end both of you were playing more defensive then anything.
As for shooting I suggest getting close to the bottom opening and backup
after you fire...you'll die less that way.

Good stuff for sure!
I always listen but that map was non-stop BOOM-BLAST-KABLAMMO!
There was a point where I said "screw it" and just started detonating missiles outside.
I noticed my standing grew as others died more than I.

Some things that still bug me in general with redeemers (and are making it less fun) are:

I see the message that I killed someone a split second before the missile explodes on them. This, I'm sure makes me look like a sitting duck to opponents. Probably related to me getting killed when I swear I translocated out of there.

I still see "indestructable" players I hit directly and they're still there.

Detonating a defensive bomb sometimes takes 3,4 or 5 clicks. By then it's too late and too far away to do what was intended to do.

Translocator doesn't always reach the expected height or misses the target repeatedly. I get high up and SPLAT!

When running thru tight areas, doorways, etc. I get "hung up" on edges, trying and retrying to get away.

Oh well, like MEAT says, Don't cry.

"Baby gonna cry"

Key to your success is practice.
...learn maps and spawn points
...learn how to contol your missile
...learn how to aim your translocator
...watch others
...watch missiles

I use to just watch players...I wouldn't even play.
A lot of us run patterns and use techniques when we play.
My advice is to watch those that are successful and copy.

My advice: rent a 60 Mbit downstream / 6 Mbit upstream High Speed optical fibre cable DSL with ultralow latency and buy a kickass computer and you'll solve most of your troubles. HellFire is a living proof of that.

A lot of what Fuzz_Ball mentioned as problems with redeemer arena aren't a redeemer arena problem but a problem some have with any UT game type.
(or just about any game for that matter)
Like getting "hung-up" in halls or around corners.

Many of the problems mentioned sound lots like lagg problems. What kind of connection do you use? Can you give us some speed test results?
~Peace~
