Firewall

Post by David » Tue Sep 01, 2009 9:36 pm

I have a question and some of you tech savvy people might have the best answers.

Firewall? I have my firewall on my router on and I have the windows firewall turned on. Is this good enough? What would you recommend?

I have a question on a setting on my router firewall, it has a box that is unchecked, should I check it? The box is Filter Internet NAT Redirection.

Thank you in advance for your help.

No it's not. Get a free third party one (I use zone alarm) and crank the protection up until it hurts a bit.

And yes filter the INAT redirect if there are people close enough to access your wifi. A savvy person could use this to tunnel out from your connection.

Concerning the firewall on my router, I have the firewall enabled. I also have mac filter turned on with only the approved computer to gain access the wireless portion with the signal not being broad casted. I also have it encrypted, which I change often.

I have the standard windows firewall as well.

I then use CCleaner (cleaner), Kaspersky AV (virus protection), and PrevX 3 (malware protection and remover).

I was not sure if I needed a third party firewall.

I am not trying to do anything risky on the computer, I just wish to be safe.

Klownz also runs a wireless security WPA2 Personal with AES and of course the good old WPA shared key on the w/router

Wide open baby! I run it wide open. No firewall, no DMZ, no AVG.....no nothing. Just pure wide open speed. I just hope nobody tries to attack me and stuff and so far somebody just got passes a server password I had once or twice. I run it all naked just like like CG and MHM don't have cheat protection. I've never had a virus or been hacked or had my identity stolen. Hell, I wish somebody would steal my identity. Then they'd get what they deserve rather me getting it all of the time.

OK, now if you think I'm telling the truth you need to admit it here so I can publicly BAN you for being stupid. I must admit that my security measures are very relaxed here. I use free anti virus and default windows firewall while sitting behind a router. I do have a BB gun.

It mostly depends on your surfing habits as to how heavily you must be protected. I will say this though that You can run an antivirus (I also use AVG), the spyware cleaner of your choice, and any firewall you want and I can post a dozen websites where you will still get infected badly simply by clicking the link and viewing the page.

It's really this reason you want a strong firewall. Quite often a firewall protects you not by blocking something coming in but by notifying you something is trying to go out. I've caught a lot of stuff "calling home" by using a strong firewall. Dump the windows firewall and get a good one.

Lastly Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free) and Combofix (also free) are the best one-two punch there is for spyware, adware and rootkits. I like adaware and spybot but all too often they have failed me and these two have always fixed things. One caveat: Combofix is a last resort program. It's effects are often harsh and sometimes not reversible but it will pull you out of a mess if you are heavily infected.

Well said Gopo. I do actually use AVG for virus scan but mine is turned up to full strength. It is the free one just like what you folks use but it comes at such weak settings that I always go in and turn them up a bit. Then I have a router that Isit behind and I use the built in firewall.

When it comes to malware and spyware and all of that, I again stick to my AVG but when I see something hads got past it and is doing stuff I use the latest greatest Malwarebytes which I install and update then run a FULL test with. If I still have the problem then I'll go to CCleaner and yes that is with 2 C's. If all else fails and if you have the money and just want it right the first time no matter what, buy and use Spyware Doctor. Don't set it to start up with your computer but have it for when you need it. It rocks. Adaware totally sucks and Spybot search and Destroy is really only good for locking your home page from being hijacked provided you have it set to protect against stuff like that.

Klownz also uses Firefox and one of the add-on's Klownz uses for it is called NoScript

"NoScript Firefox extension provides extra protection for Firefox, Flock, Seamonkey and other mozilla-based browsers: this free, open source add-on allows JavaScript, Java and Flash and other plugins to be executed only by trusted web sites of your choice (e.g. your online bank), and provides the most powerful Anti-XSS protection available in a browser.

Never surf the web without it because Google is worse than the Federal government and Nazis combined.

What about P2P protection such as PeerGaurdian 2? Does anyone uses it and how do you like it?

PG is crap. I had this argument over at their forum a while back. They give people a false sense of security.

One of the forum admins banned me by my request and I posted in the same thread 3 minutes later using a proxy. I just wanted to demonstrate how useless it is to try to keep a blocklist in todays web environment. They deleted the thread but kept my ban :(

Anyhow its useless. The people wanting to watch the P2P simply switch to a listen station on a fresh IP that isnt in the list.

Well this time it is not about me or my computer. My wife's aunt needed help with her computer that had some issue. Once I saw the computer running I knew it was malware. The malware program was trying to pass itself as a microsoft windows program called itself "Safety Center". I did some research on it and found out a free way to remove it was to download a program called Malwarebytes. I have heard of Malwarebytes before so I tried it. I did this and it got rid of the "safety center". I dislike going to that house to work on that computer because the aunt allows her sons download whatever and causes issues.

I just wanted to pass the information along.

Maybe that is where I heard of it? ha ha ha ha. I have heard of it before you mentioned it, but you are the first that I have spoken with that had experience with it. It took care of the issue, and hopefully I will not need to go back for a year or so.

So thank you Gopostal for your recommendation. It helped.
