What is a good chess program
My 11 yr old and 8 yr old are playing chess a little, with an actual board.
What would be a good chess pc game, that would allow you to select difficulty?
I have tried Chess 3D 4.22, Chess 2003, real 3D Chess, and War Chess. I liked one of them for the graphics but it did allow you to select difficulty, so if you are playing against the computer, a child or me would get spanked...
It would be nice to have a two player mode, maybe a lan capability, and good graphics..

I found one that will do for now and that is called shaagchess. It has some good points. The graphics are on the better side, it is free, you can can select difficulty.

Sorry I didn't reply. I played chess a sa kid but have forgotten how to play and have no interest in learning again. I had no way to help you with this either.

Re: What is a good chess program
No worry Herm. I am not a chess player anymore either. I was not a big chess fan when I was kid, but I knew how to play as a novice (I knew the basics).
But since my daughters seem to want to play chess, I wanted to be supportive and find something nice for them.
It has the good points I mentioned above and I forgot to mention, it will highlight possible moves for that piece when you click on it. It helps you learn.
You can change the color of the boards and or pieces and you can play in 3d or 2d. You move by clicking on the piece and then the location you want to move it to.
Make a long story short, this program did not seem to install like normal games. So Manually placed the folder in program file and then sent the game icon to the desktop. There is a configure file you need to launch to select some settings, but it is easy.

Hands down, I'm a huge fan of BattleChess. It has a simple mode where you can play on a 2-D board for basic play. It also has the more fun 3-D mode where it's just a board at a slight angle and the pieces walk around when you move them and then beat the crap out of each other.
There used to be a full version for sale with multiple boards and modes but my Mom used to be a manager at IBM and one of her employees actually wrorte the game so she had a simple original version she gave to me.
I might still have it....I do!
For the record, this game's menu, which you can't see...if at the top of the screen and you have to right click the mouse to bring it up. Can be played with both mouse and/or keyboard.

I do remember vattle chess and that one I was looking for (the full version). I liked the battle that the pieces have.. lol
Now days they have "Battle VS Chess" which is the modern version of Battle Chess. At least in my opinion. or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shZ-fAGEJ_w

The more I play Shaagchess, it is actually a decent game. Easy enough for my kids to use and enjoy and I like the graphics, it is clean and sharp. I can win on the asy mode, but.......
I do not fair so well on the other levels.

By the by, don't knock an actual chess board. While I don't play much anymore I still own an actual board. When the power goes out computer games are just not that interesting.

I am not knocking it. We have one, but the computer way, any of my daughters could play against the computer and no need to convince the other sibling to play when they do not want to.EvilGrins wrote:By the by, don't knock an actual chess board. Re: What is a good chess program
I downloaded it, I won the first game with that default computer setting of "Medium - 2 ply search depth"
I love chess, used to play tonnes. The best board is a simple board because you use it all the time. I used to have a fancy board based on sherlock holmes characters, but it wasn't practical for playing, just gathered dust, so I eventually gave it away. (I had to hang on to it for a little while, since it was a gift
)
Chess is half basics. You can't unleash your genius until you know the basics. A good book for teaching the basics is a good idea.
