My PC is infected or dead...

I woke up Sunday morning to a broken PC. I might have a bad hard drive or maybe it is infected. Who knows. My system says I don't have a c: drive and everything that was on my C: drive now shows to be on my D: drive.

This may be a virus. I'm unsure. I had no time to try to fix it yesterday because I was too busy doing family and house stuff. That is why I haven't posted or responded to anyone since Saturday. I'll try to get my system back up tonight. I do have back up images but they are a little older than I like. I'll set it up this time to image the c: drive every other day.

Open console (CMD) and type this:

sfc /scannow <enter>

Windows will check it's configuration and can repair certain problems.

Checkdisk /r < to check the NTFS sectors >

Use this HDD utility:
http://www.hdat2.com/files/hdat2iso_481.exe

If all these things does not work, perhaps it is a virus.
Make sure you have also looked in eventviewer

Roger that. thanks. I'll let you know what happens. I took out the old drive and am setting up the new one first. When I'm done, I'll swap back to the old one and goof off with it to see what Ican or can't fix. Yes, I like to waste time doing stuff like that so that I learn how to fix stuff better and what is better than on a live system? Nothing.

None that I know of. I'm still setting it up but I am on it right now. Istill have to install all of the versions of UT I had and the printer and the webcam and all of that stuff but it is coming along nicely. I did scan the last hard drive for viruses and found none. I am going to start a scandisk on it right before I go to bed. I bet Ihave some bad sectors. We'll see.

Ihad a short chance to scan over the old hdd last night. It has no virus (supposedly) and no bad sectors.

It is said by Microsoft that you can't change the drive letter of the system disk. My system disk was C: and now all of the files for it are on D: and it says C: does not exist. There is also a new 100mb drive letter on the same drive. It is empty.

I think this was a rootkit virus that did this to my drive. I'm still not sure to be honest. I'll continue with testing as time allows. Speaking of "allows" my mother in law gets into town tonight. We'll see how much time on my PC my wife "allows" while she is here.

The rebuild is going slowly but nicely. I'm having trouble moving my Outlook .pst file to a place where I can back it up easily. Why did they have to make this process hard? It used to be so easy!

Ok check out this thread I posted at Excalibur Holland. I had to discuss measuring and baking before I listed the recipes since it's a European message board, so just skim the first few paragraphs.

I must admit I'd rather help bake cookies with my family than play an online game any day, especially if they were from one of these three recipes.
