I run windows 7 - 64 bit
and my other computer is XP and it has a 64 bit cpu too.
I tried to run windows 7 on it but it did not like it lol

Before installing a new OS, it is worth downloading the main drivers first.
Windows only comes with basic drivers for most hardware.
The important ones to get right first are;
1) Motherboard chipset
2) Graphics
3) Network devices
as long as it can then connect to the net, you can update the rest later.
The support page for the motherboard (or PC if it came pre-made), will tell you what the chipset is if you don't know.
