"Phone addiction"
I heard about this problem in the media years ago from the first owners of Blackberries. It seems the problem has gotten a lot worse. A city in the USA banned cellphone use while crossing the street, because people had their heads down and glued to the phone and weren't watching the traffic. The media in Toronto are abuzz with talk of a "heads down" ban.
I've seen crazy stuff happen at the busiest and most dangerous intersection in my part of the town I live in. One person glanced up enough to see the "walk" light come on, then was heads down as she crossed the street and was oblivious to the late left turner who passed in front of her. Another time a lady was so absorbed that she just walked straight across the street against the light. The traffic was heavy and moving fast and above the speed limit. But somehow she crossed in a brief lull in traffic with no idea how close she came to getting killed.
A family is profiled in the story from CBC's "Marketplace" show. Frankly I think that the parents have been very irresponsible. I hope that they are not a typical family.
But then the frank admission by a software developer that cyber addictive qualities are designed into the "apps" for smart phones was rather shocking.

And speaking of cyber addiction, I just learned that the company I was planning to have build my next PC in the near future has closed all of their shops in Ontario. So I guess I won't be getting into any relapses just yet.
I must admit that I have overall enjoyed being a near Luddite. Using the library PC's means that if anything goes wrong it's not my problem!

Re: "Phone addiction"
There is nothing new, everywhere is the same. Teenagers walking like zombies crossing street without to even blink with phone in front of eyes ignoring everything - if car gets some damage and cannot slow down, they are victims guaranteed. They are living in their virtual world losing contact with reality more and more. I did not figure how much brain damage can get a human based on these habbits but I'll see later - probably too late.
Right now I have 2 devs:
- 1 simple phone which I use for calls only:
- 1 "smart" which I use rarely - my eyes are not that good for such a device and when I'm working I don't have time for fooling around. I have only a game installed there, navigation stuff and default apps.
So to speak I survived so far without "smart" devices and I'm fine thanks.
A surgery was really helpful for me not a "smart" device.

Re: "Phone addiction"
Yes, this is real issue.
I see this everyday, almost every minute of the day.
It is horrible, and dangerous. Over 30 years, when I call myself maybe " old " , I hope the next generation has a future to live for. I mean the youth these days are unrespectful, do doesn't listen, ignorant and lazy.
When driving back to and from work, I often must make last-second-break stop with my car.
This is a real danger:
Also pedestrians and driving people.
but there maybe a solution :

but scientists say it is cause of a hormone / brainfunction ?

Re: "Phone addiction"
Makes me nervous to ride my motorcycle on streets in Houston with everyone doing that behind the wheel of their car. This is the first, best excuse for driver-less cars.
For the record, I am guilty too.

Re: "Phone addiction"
California has got laws against it, but I'd be lying if I said I don't still catch people behind the wheel doing it.
Mostly they're parked at the time though, hopefully they're not doing it while their vehicles are in motion.

Re: "Phone addiction"
I'm super interested in seeing how this plays out. On one hand the danger of car+cell is undeniable. Study after study shows it to be on par with drunk driving.
On the other hand it's socially accepted to be the norm and you are absolutely not going to stop it via legislation. You think prohibition was a mess? Wait till officials try to clamp down on car+cell. The general public feels entitled to use cells in cars and you first will need to address that before any law will ever have an impact.
My interest is to see if anything can in fact be done. Personally I think we are stuck until driverless cars are a thing. The toothpaste is out of the tube when it comes to cell phone usage and there is likely no going back.

Re: "Phone addiction"
Do you know what was my boss saying ?
When self driving cars are going to be a default life thing I won't use them ever. If that system is hacked, the car can be directed right to the bottom of ocean - this is a new future of terrorism, taking control over devices which can do damage remotely - I'm fully agree with him here.
Already at HKN was mentioned a medical device controlled by a doctor remotely... and unknown other guys, for medicines administration, such a hacked device could inject an over-doze and... you won't respawn in that case...

As fake as this seems, it makes me want to test this method. Now all I need is an air horn and a hot girlfriend.

Re: "Phone addiction"
I loved that! I don't think it was fake at all. I could do this to my wife over 10 times a day and she too denies she has a cell phone addiction problem.
I loved this! Thank you for posting it.
