When a Server Becomes Cranky...

Post by *POTS* » Wed Sep 02, 2009 5:37 pm

I'd like to share this with you, I'm pretty sure Herm may have already experienced these problems in the past so...

Situation #1
I'm trying to connect to a public server and I get the following message:
"Connection failed - The version of the package ARYX doesn't match".

I do already have a package named Aryx installed on my laptop, is UT case sensitive? Does it mean Aryx, ARYX, aryx and aryX count as four different packages? What can I do, apart from removing my package and download the ARYX one from the server? And what can a server admin do, in order to prevent that issue?

Situation #2
I'm trying to connect to another public server and I get the following message:
"Connection failed - The download of the package "UTChaosMap" has failed. The server refused to send UTChaosMap"

This is clearly a server-side problem. What are the possible causes of that? The problem is I can't join the server, unless I find that darn package somewhere else and install it manually.

So the server does have only a version of that particular package and it doesn't match the name of the package the map is looking for.

I blame some mappers for changing the name of the default packages and creating all of these mismatch errors.

Thanks for the link MEAT.

Yep, it is the mapper's fault for not renaming files after making changes. Also, when the download fails due to server refused to send, it is because the admin things he has the file properly installed on a redirect server and thus tells the actually game server to never send files to the player. The player then joins and by default if the redirect fails, it will try to get it from the server itself. I think that is right! Maybe it tries the server first and if the server is set to say no and the redirect is broken or something then you get that error. Amazing how much I have forgotten from not having to deal with these failures in such a long time.

Worry not, they'll be back up in my face soon enough. I have plenty of stuff to add to the server to make all of this crap happen to me again.

@ Scify
Yes but in the second case the server is not sending me the required package.

Ok I've found out that the troublesome packages were part of the ChaosUT mod. I've installed it and I've finally unlocked the server.

The Multiplay UK folks should give me a VIP account, since one of their servers has been stuck on a particular map for half a week and nobody cared.

Anyway thanks for your support. :)

If you are now something like a Super POTS for saving the day at that server, would I then need to start calling you ISDN or DSL instead of POTS?

Just wondering,

Well, I don't think so because I do still have 300 ping (on average) on your servers.
I guess they're located too far away from me. :(
Funny though, since I'm currently using a 7 Mbit ADSL...

P.S. OC24 = Optical Carrier 24 (1244.16 Mbps), right? LOL Herm, you're so leet.

With that speed, you should run your OWN server! :P

If you knew what POTS was I figured you'd get the OC24 part too. Your DSL is fast indeed. What the hell? Why aren't you serving up? C'mon.......it's fun. It makes you look older than you really are and you'll be cool. The chics really dig the the Admins too. C'mon......what are you chicken? Everybody's doing it. Come on mannnnnnn.

Because I have only 400 Kbit upload speed and a crappy laptop AKA craptop. Plus I can't leave it running 24/7...
Oh and you American guys would probably have a high ping as well.

Come to think of it, CG started with a max upload speed of 360 unlike it's current 3000. 400 can play about 6 players I think.

Six players? With a NetServerMaxTickRate=20 (default) and a MaxClientRate=5000 it should work fine I think...

AllowDownloads=True  This should prevent those nasty "the server refused to send the "whatever" package" if the redirect is either broken or not working, right?

Well it's the hardware that really worries me. The laptop has become so freaking slow that I can hardly open both Firefox and Outlook Express at the same time. As soon as I get a new laptop I might give it a chance. Redirection is another big deal though.

Pots you are welcome to use the test servers redirect. In fact if you want I can burn the server to a DVD for you and it would make setup very simple, or you can rip the entire thing down to your computer via FTP. You'd just have to do some quick edits in the UT.ini is all.
