Need help....please

Post by Green Hornet » Thu May 10, 2012 11:30 am

UT 99 was working good when i had Windows XP service pak 2.
I upgraded my computer to Windows Vista Home edition. Now when I play UT99 I have only 2 choices.
First, I have to disable sound that is the only way UT99 will start.

Second. If I go to "Safe Mode" setup everything is unchecked except "Disable sound"
box. It will play.
What happened?? I tried to re-install it. and I hear the music while it is installing.
but when I go to play it I have to disable sound....

All other programs work fine and have sound except UT99, I have a on board sound card could that be the problem. It never was a problem in the past.

Thank you

What happens exactly if you don't disable sound?

Do me a favor, take a screenshot of your audio settings and reply with it. Maybe you've got 3D surround on or something simple.

I bet you'll have to uninstall and re-install before you get it working right again. If all else fails, I can remote in to your PC and try to help.

Ok If I do not disable sound, all that it does is show a black screen, no music no nothing but a black screen.
I have to hit Ctrl/Alt/Del then go into Task manager and hit End program.
The message i get in Task manager is Unrealtournament is not responding.

In "Safe" mode i need to disable sound in order for it to play. If I uncheck each box ecept the sound box ( see Attchment #2) All i get is the black screen.
No ,atter what box i check as long is "sound" is disablbled UT will load fine

With Sound box checked (see attchment #1) It will load and play great.

Is it possible that it is something as simple as going to the website for your mobo and its on board sound card and downloading new drivers?
I'm a man........but I can change........if I have to........I guess

Yes but the magic word I heard was "UPGRADED"

He said he upgraded his PC from XP to Vista. I don't recall if you can go straight from XP to Vista or if it has to be a fresh install. I know that his chances are highly likely if he actually managed to only upgrade and not do a full new install that his UT is whacked now. Yes, he may only need new drivers but it never seems to be that simple for me. Wish it was.

So there is our next official question to you GH. Did you do a fresh/ brand new install of Vista or did you upgrade your XP to Vista and kept all of your old files and such?

To answer your question I did have to do a fresh install, I copied my files to my slave drive that i needed. I had to re-install some programs, Mech Warrior 3, MOH, I copied all my maps from UT99. I did not copy textuers, sound, etc ..etc..

Also I opened my unrealtournament.ini file and it states in it I have a Galaxy Audio Subsystem.. and a Generic Audio System see attached...

To be clear I have UT99 Game of the year edition, (If that matters).

OK I GOT IT RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you everybody and POTS...I went to Fuzz Balls sight and I got the answer.
If you're still experiencing troubles, you might consider disabling Direct Sound support for UT. Just open your UnrealTournament.INI file located in your UT\System folder and then, under the [Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem] section, change the following entry:
UseDirectSound=True
to
UseDirectSound=False
It worked. :):):):)
Thanks again everybody...

My big question is...
Why "upgrade" to Vista?
From my experience, and others, it is the worst Windows ever. (slowest anyway)
Maybe leave it on XP - Or go to Win7.

But, in any case, Glad to hear you are all set again Green Hornet!

I recall hating Vista at first because my PC wasn't configured properly. I had a mobo all tricked out for overclocking. The ram was overclocked too. I needed more ram for Vista so bought a larger quantity of ram for my mobo but forgot the board was set to overclock the ram. The ram I bought was more quantity yes but not was not ready to be over clocked. All of the trouble I had was because my new ram could not go as fast as the mobo was trying to run it. I though the problem was Vista and uninstalled it and went back to XP.

One night it hit me what I had done wrong. I got another hard drive and put it in and slowed down the ram speed on the mobo and installed Vista. Beside all of the dumb little issue Vista has that I resolved or worked around, Vista was fine after that. Vista was simply too big of a step for Microsoft and it became awkward.

My point is while I love XP and Vista is certainly not my favorite, Vista can certainly be made to run very very well though I was always able to get XP to run UT better than Vista could.

I also want to say that I'm not familiar with that Vista fix and I hate the though of pulling over stuff from an old setup towards trying to make a new setup work. But I would do what it takes to get it fixed and you did so congrats!
