I lost 32.5% of my total portfolio between March and December of 2008. Some people tell me I did pretty good compared to them.

Our retirement is in several different electable funds. For years I have been in the "G" fund or the safe, bond payback rate. All my workmates were investing in the stock market backed funds raking in cash and laughing at me.
