Your player name is set to Player...

Post by Fuzz_Ball » Tue Mar 03, 2009 12:32 am

After some usual redeemer humiliation this evening, I returned to my computer for more abuse.

Earlier this evening, I was noticing horrendous respose time as if I was playing on a 486/66 with 32MB of ram.

So the latest launch attempt of UT tells me my player name is set to Player and that I should set up a player profile, etc.

My skin was the default soldier dude and all my voice binds were erased.

This happened a while ago on another computer.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Could it be the same entity scanning Klownz ports masqerading as Hook's?

This kind of urinates me!

Sounds like your user.ini is getting erased or overwritten.

Also scanning of ports isn't really a bad thing. Just because someone canvasses your ports, it doesn't really mean anything other than they walked by and jiggled your front door handle to see if the door was locked.

I always have it if I reinstall UT everyone has unless you don't delete your user.ini.

Hmm.

No changes had been made to my installation. I've only used this machine to play UT on that day.

It does seem wise to make backup copies of the user.ini and perhaps the UnrealTournament.ini as that file once took a nosedive on my as well.

I do remember trying another server and some unfamiliar "Install blablabla" window popped up. I canceled out of that though. Too bad I can't remember which server that was.

You can also lock them too IIRC from being written to. This prevents you from making any changes yourself but it keeps them from being altered. Right-click User.ini>properties> and tick "read-only". This will prevent any alters to it at all good or bad. I remember years ago this was a problem on some servers because they would write ads to your user and UT files. Now it would be nice too to prevent those automatic favorite adds.

I've seen people's name changed to Player1 and Player5 and stuff like that manay times. I had always thought it was a network issue that usually only happened when the server was full and the map changed or even more people joined.

That behavior is a lag thing. If I get disconnected and then reconnect immediately sometimes the server thinks I'm still there and makes my name Player# because my name is taken. I've even joined fast enough to see myself standing there. Nexgen is kinda bad for that with MH. At times it will load the game poorly and everyone will be renamed Player. A quick disconnect from server fixes it.

I'm almost sure it could've been the UTDC dll file. It's a common anticheat tool that requires also a client-side installation.

I think ScottyD's idea makes sense.

We've discovered in another thread that the Flag of Lag is something that I should not be seeing at all with a cable connection.

POTS, the install screen I saw was much different than the UTDC that I usually see.
Good thing I did not click ok.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Uh, it is from lag. Weren't you just reading this Hook? Duh! LOL.

High speed cable can get the flag but should only get it when there is network trouble or if the server is busy doing something else and serving at the same time. I can turn on the screen saver for the CG server and everyone will laggg out badly until I turn it iff. There are many things that can make the flag happen but it should hardly ever happen unless the server is crashing or when you first connect to a server. Otherwise you should just about never see a Flag of Laggg.

It's worse. At least in a loop of poop it is supposed to happen and should be expected. The Flag of Laggg only happens when there is trouble in the network somewhere. It could be settings or hardware or any number of hard to find things. It is like having lag in a game you are playing but so badly that you are paralyzed or even worse, it is like running through a forest with a blindfold on.
