I dont mean to complain, BUT....
Guys I'd like to start a thread on things that make you angry or irritate you about monsterhunt. I'm starting now on Monsterhunt v6 and it would be nice to know what people would like to change/add/improve so I know what areas to really concentrate on.
I'll start with some things that bother me:
+ You lose points for killing Nali and Rabbits and Cows. Ummm...it's monsterHUNT not letsBeFriends
+ Finding the end trigger in maps that have no flow
+ Sniper rifle screws up the weapon HUD
+ Finding the last monster or two in a huge map

Good stuff you have listed, GP!
Although I'm not a MH expert by any means,
The tiny hoppity-hop challenges make me leave every time.
After the 12th or 13th fall into the fire, lava, abyss, I'm ready to go play with my redeemer again.
Is it forward-jump-crouch or jump-forward-crouch?
Oh and the areas where you can't seem to get ahead without a translocator or jump boots (and none to be found unless you're an admin) kinda annoy me too.
I know, "watch the Nali do it".

Re: I dont mean to complain, BUT....
Real quick, Nali, Nali Cows and Nali Rabbits should remain friends since they have been built that way since the original. There are even maps with a curse built in that if you kill them things get way worse like MH-Winter. For these reasons and staying with the first rendition, I'd keep them the way they are. More on this later. In big hurry now to go see Mom.

I agree with you Herm, but I think it's stupid you have to lose your score, because a bored mapper has put 200 Nalis in a narrow corridor at the end of his map (for example MH-Sake, or a Japanese map I forgot the name).
So at least let's make a compromise: if you kill Nalis, Cows and Rabbits, your score will stay untouched.
2. BT areas with acid/lava/pressure zones where you are forced to waste most of your lives;
3. Unreal1 bugged weapons (especially the Rifle and the Quadshot);
4. Messed up monster counters where a monster is missing and you can't finish a map;
5. Players that grab all powerups that will take an eternity to respawn (Searchlights for example)

1. Monsters being able to block doors, for example the one at the start of MH-Bluff;ScottyD wrote:Guys I'd like to start a thread on things that make you angry or irritate you about monsterhunt. I'd agree, I also like that Nali's, Humans & Cows are your friends.
In some maps the Nali's help you, so I think it must stay like it is now.
The other things you want to change I agree with.

Re: I dont mean to complain, BUT....
I'm right with you guys on the nali's but honestly when is the last time you saw a nali make it through a map? People kill them anyway. My vote is to at least make them a null score so you don't lose points, or even as a compromise not so danged many.
Unreal 1 weapons...I can do a total replacement of weapons if you guys desire, or at least the U1 sniper rifle (which causes the most problems). I'm not sure what will happen with the skaarj snipers but if thats an issue, I'll write a replacement class for them too. Edit: Just added replacement code for the u1 sniper rifle to be replaced by the UT sniper rifle. I tested it out on Minas Tirith and it works just fine, even for the sniper skaarj. Yay! One problem solved.
I've set the non-locked movers to be opened by bumping when the mod loads but as for a monster blocking a door, its probably best to fix the map. Once you start shifting monsters en mass, bad things can happen.
About monster counters....I'm struggling with how to address that. Perhaps an admin command that sets the monsterend to on? Really though in that situation you should just vote. Monsters can fall out of the world and screw the count and theres nothing you can do.
Concerning pickups...I set the health pickups, jumpboots to 2 second respawn. What other items to add to that? Searchlight...what else? Lastly about the scuba and water regen. Do we keep underwater regen or dump it and add a HUD timer for the scuba gear? I could also set the scuba to last forever so you wouldn't have to keep finding it. Oh, and I'll fix that scuba breath sound while on land issue too.
Thank you guys for your input here!! It means the world to me.

Re: I dont mean to complain, BUT....
I suggest:
1. What I really hate is to press F5 to see other players and instead I find a monster (often an skaarj). Then I have to surf through all the 100 skaajrs on the map to find the player or players I´m looking for.
2. I don´t know if this is possible, and it´s not something really important. I have special keys for each UT weapon (Q for shock, R for sniper and E for flak) is it possible that the Unreal 1 weapons could keep that binding? I mean, if I have Q for shock, I´d like the ASMD to be bound with Q as well. I´d like UT to treat those Unreal 1 weps as UT weps.

Re: I dont mean to complain, BUT....
A while ago i actually a LONG while ago, i read a thing by the smiling monster's admin that he had coded a MH mod that redid the point system.
Instead of the killing shot taking all of the points, the points that you get for killing a monster was dependent off of who took off the most damage.
so when your blasting away at a titan for two hours and right before it dies somebody comes up and steals the points from you, he doesnt get all of the points like the current mod does.
im all for teamwork and how points arent part of it, but after all that hard work some guy comes over and steals your thunder?
This may be hard to incorporate with everything you are trying to do, and i dont want exactly that, but can the point system be redone to better suit the player?

Ditto! I don't wanna lose 200 points on MH-Sake because of an overbored mapper.

Good idea!

Hard question here. I really like underwater regen, but a Scuba HUD timer might be helpful too.

Excellent! I forgot to mention that bug.
Ah yes that annoying bug... I use the ViewPlayer console command, unfortunately is not easy to write names like HellFire and others with all those weird characters.Reiyel_3.0 wrote:I suggest:

I used to like the Destination Unreal score system: gained points were directly proportional to the damage inflicted.BigBoss wrote:A while ago i actually a LONG while ago, i read a thing by the smiling monster's admin that he had coded a MH mod that redid the point system.

But true. I think (not sure) that the mod you´re talking about is being used on the dU server. I don´t know. But if that´s the case, there´s something I don´t like about the scoring method they use on their server. Is that it gives you too many points. I mean, I´ve seen people on that server with 1500000 score or more after a map. That´s just ridiculous.
You can try the suggestion Boss said but not with that kind of scoring.

Re: I dont mean to complain, BUT....
The points system to me is a bit "point"less. Stats aren't really tracked unless you count the gametracker list. It's an easy matter though to slam AFO three maps straight and add 10K to your player's total so it's not a true indicator of player.
I talk with BoB some from dU (he's the main coder) and they have a pretty good system in place for points if you like that sort of thing. Personally I don't. I think when you start playing for stats, bad things follow. One thing that does bother me though is to finish a map in the negative because a bunch of Nali got in the way. I guess in the overall scheme of things it's a silly thing that makes no difference, but it still irritates me. Good concept, bad map execution...like a whole lot else in MH.

Just like I said, I don´t like their system at all.ScottyD wrote: I talk with BoB some from dU (he's the main coder) and they have a pretty good system in place for points if you like that sort of thing.
I also think score is not something very important in a cooperative game. But that remembers me of an argue I had once with a friend of mine who also plays this game.
We used to play MH a lot on MHM1. But he was always looking for frags and trying to steal score for others. I really disliked that attitude and I told him personally and in online chat that the point of MH is not finding a "winner" but to play in cooperation. I told him many times that MH is not like DM at all.
I told him that he should try to see MH as CTF; is the team who wins, not only you. But then he told me something that surprised me.
He said that yes, in CTF the team wins because at the end of the game the flag of the winner team is being shown with the "Congratulations, you won the match", in a symbolical way of telling that the whole team has won. In DM, when the game ends, the player with most frags is shown with the message I´ve typed above, meaning that he and only him, is the winner.
He said that in MH the player with most frags is shown at the end, in a way telling that he or she is the winner just like in DM. Maybe too simple logic but he told me that.
Perhaps, instead of looking for new score systems, you could make that, at the end of the match, it´s a random player that´s being shown instead of the player with most frags, or maybe the start point. The idea is to give the message that the whole team has won and not only one player.

Interesting reading, thank you!!
I can alter the view to pick a random player and show them, or even to cycle among the players.
