Firefighters remove debris in the city of L’Aquila, after a strong earthquake rocked central Italy, early Monday, April 6, 2009. A powerful earthquake struck central Italy early Monday, killing at least 20 people, collapsing buildings and leaving thousands of people homeless, officials and news reports said. Officials said the death toll was likely to rise as rescue crews made their way through the debris. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude of the quake was 6.3, though Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics put it at 5.8. (AP Photo/Pier Paolo Cito)

It has been an awful day for Italy. Thank God I live in the South-East part of Italy.

Yes, very shocking.

I hate earthquakes, specially since the last earthquake I´ve experienced. It was on 2007, I´ve been traveling quite much the last few years but in that time I was here, in Peru. It was like 19:00 and I was driving home with my girlfriend and I stopped on a red light. Then I realised that the car was shaking; I confirmed it was an earthquake since I saw people leaving their houses and screaming. Since the earthquake didn´t seem to stop soon, I passed the red light because I was only at 6 or 7 blocks from home. Another street light; I saw it shaking like if it was made of paper, I passed it too since I thought it was gonna fall at anytime. When I was arriving home we got a total blackout, people were frightened.
Phone lines didn´t work until the next day. Luckily, no major damages and no people injured in Lima.

At the next day we knew that at small country-side town at the south of Lima called Pisco had been completely destroyed. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3 in Lima and 8.5 in Pisco. Not sure but I think almost 5 thousand people died on that town.

Since that day I panic only thinking about earthquakes. The last year (2008) I´ve been living in Brazil and I still had some nightmares about that earhquake. :|

That is horrible news.
We've been seeing it on the news here as well.
The damage is staggering & I hope that no more deaths will discovered as many people are still unaccounted for.
My grandparents were from Torino so I'm always interested in all things Italian.
My prayers are with Italy.

I'm very glad that you and everybody we know is ok. I know about the earthquakes in Peru too. I have lived there and in Quito. It is the craziest thing to be in an earthquake!

Both are nasty. Earthquakes are lots more shocking when they happen because they freak you out everytime where as hurricanes give you time to plan, run, hide, stay prepare etc etc. With a Earthquake is just can't be explained. It is the worst especially if they are bad. I lived within eye-site of Mt. Cotopaxi from our 5th story bedroom patio when I lived in South America. Yes, we had a 6 story house while I lived there. Iwas specifically built to be earthquake resistant.

We had mild earthquakes all of the time. Peru had much worse ones.
