Weapon Speed

Post by MEAT » Thu Feb 25, 2010 10:07 pm

Actually I'm concerned about the speed of the projectile the weapon fires.

My question is:
Is it possible to increase the speed in which a bullet/missile can fly compared
to everyone else?
In other words what would I have to do to make my missiles fly faster then yours?
Or is it not possible?

MEAT and I discussed this already and I know how to do it but it is my opinion that doing so does not have an advantage. I want to know if anyone else knows a way or ways to to it that are different from my way.

I've been told that I'm doing it...but I don't even know it...lol
Same is true for your redeemer to Hermskii...yours is faster then most.

Hmmm? I have an idea then. We all need to agree to show up at the same time and place and vote for a large map. Then we'll get somebody to stand at one end while we 3 all shoot at the same time form the other end. Then we can see who's is faster. We should do this on each of our servers too to determine if it is a player, server, or ping issue. What say you? We need Hook in the along with MEAT Klownz and myself.

Never noticed!
Yes - I'm in - I'm interested.
Let's do the test like Hermskii said.
Best time for me is Late Night on Saturday - but I can make exceptions.

Sat...9:40pm PST...been on for an hour and a half.
Tested missile speeds with players "Time" and "Cobra"
and later with player "George".
It seems our missiles speeds were the same.
No difference.

What are you a night watchman?
Opps, I forget I work weekends and have to go to sleep earlier then most.
No matter...my missiles are the same speed as yours and everyone else.
I'm now over this crap of people saying my missiles are faster.

Equip your missiles with afterburners, or play UT on a craptop with energy saving, multicore, dial-up, windows updates, AV updates and all that crap enabled at the same time and tell us what happens...

@1) Well, that's news to me! And how could it NOT be an advantage? A faster flying missile will arrive sooner in a spam map, and probably be able to "tunnel through" the server lag effects that occur from the multiple explosions better, in those small maps where everyone is close to one another and spamming away like mad.

@2 Of course it's a ping issue. How many times have I described the weird stuff that happens when you're lagging out over the years? And been accused of whining, not reporting, and then had it verified by others like The Jargonaut, as actually happening? I've long since lost count.

Persons with a ping of, say 25, are never going to understand the bs that someone playing at 250 often has to put up with unless they experience it themselves often enough to get an idea of what it's like, and see the weird stuff that you can experience for themselves.

Let's say you're playing on one of the deck maps: If your signal is 10x better, you're going to be able to guide more accurately, and steer a direct line to your opponent, while his rocket is losing valuable seconds as it wobbles all over the place while he tries to guide his up, down, and around to get to you.

And with his 10x disadvantage, even though unguided rockets may travel at the same speed, he has 1/10 the time to react.

So of course things seem to be happening faster to him.

Edit: Yeah, yeah, I know. DMW and Clem were on 56k and could often win anyway. But they solved their lag issues by studying the maps, and devising a pattern to run through the map, while spamming the spawn points. By not staying in one place for even a moment, they made their lag work in their favour, since if anyone spotted them and fired at them, they were already shooting at a spot that had long since been abandoned.
Of course, every time Hermskii introduced a new map, they suffered badly. -Until they learned what they needed to do in it. :D

Just played on that CMM server and had the same results with missile speeds.

Tests ran on both MRS and CMM:
Single shot/shots with Redeemer----same speed
Single shot/shots with SniperDeemer----same speed
Guided missile----same speed

Additional test:
Radius of blast----same
Distance with thrown translocator----same distance

Thanks to those that participated in this little experiment.

Case of the speedy missile is now official closed.

Yes. All things being equal.

However one of the weird things that can happen during lag is an effective increase in the blast radius of the redeemer.

This is one of the things I mentioned I seemed to be experiencing many times, but was generally disbelieved, until Jarg reported that he'd learned somewhere that it is a function of the game physics and the lag that causes the effective increase to the blast area, to the person who is suffering the lag at that moment.

For example, I once shot a rocket in the large room of Deck 16 from the stairs end all the way to the ledge where the sniper rifle would be located, and had the fireball come all the way back to me and take me out. My disbelief at what I had just seen was tempered by the message that " a nameless entity has killed his own dumb self".

Just a note here...
I used to play on 56k dial up also and there are ways to make it work FOR you - like nameless was saying that a few players used to do. (gad he's got a good memory)
But, it didn't have to do with knowing the map - it was more how to use the lag in your favor.
I can't exactly remember what I did, but with a heavy lag it could also screw up and fool those with a low ping or good connection.
Laggy players tend to disappear and reappear jerkily in different places.
I've seen this now with players playing from other countries and with a laggy high ping.
Sometimes it is hard to determine exactly where they are.
I wrote an article about it years ago somewhere...
