Re: Extreme lag issue
I think TCP Optimizer can be pretty useful, but I've never had much success using any of the default/preset settings.
When I calculate best RWIN based on throughput and latency I get different numbers than TCP offers and I get better performance when using my own settings vs. the TCP presets.
I still think it would be a good idea to run the Tweak tools at DSL Reports because that way you will be able to see more details such as transfer and line efficiency, dropped packets, retransmitted packets, etc.
Back to your traceroute. Seems to me it clearly indicates an issue en route because that one location times out consistently...even from your work 20.
The other location (can't remember the details) shows a latency of over 700ms which isn't bad enough to time out, but it's bad enough that it's probably retransmitting packets like crazy because most aren't making the trip.
Maybe I'm nuts, but if it were me I'd call my provider, share the TR results with them and suggest that there's a weak hub or something that's keeping you from getting full service.
Use the "full service" bit in there somewhere if you talk to them.

Re: Extreme lag issue
well i read through everyone's and its been lots of help, i tried this morning before i went to bed (about 3) to run avg free, and guess what? it wouldnt do any type of scan for me! Closer investigation brought to light that avg had somehow become corrupted and it could not produce log files.....A virus? maybe......About time ive invested in some actual virus care anyways. Im going to re read all of this to take it in again, havent had time to clean out my pc, but i will get rid of avg totally and run my games and see if there are still problems.
This Combo fix sounds really interesting im going to give it a try, ive tried the optimizer SB was talking about before and it didnt do much for me......
Mandrake being an IT man, does mcafee work well? Is it worth its cost? Im willing to pay if its worth it, but ive always been a bit weary of anti viruses.
I've tried kasperkey and i hated it, cant remember why (was a while ago) to be honest but it didnt work well for me at all.
Some more info:
Firewall has always been off, cant play lan games with them on other wise they interfere, so there isnt any activity there whatsoever.
Pretty sure its not isp like i said happens offline too although im still not a fan of my yahoo.
No printers connected to this specific computer with the lag issue
Im on windows 7 (dunno if that helps at all)
I'm on a network with 2 laptops and 2 desktops connected (including mine) so ofcourse an occasional lag comes from just bandwidth use, but this is not just a normal lag lol
Thanks again everyone! Ill pop back in after ive done some work on it!

Hey Bigboss!
McAfee has been around a long time and is one of the industry's leading companies that deal in Anti-Virus protection and Research. Ive worked with many different types of antivirus and found McAfee to be superior in protection without using a ton of system resources in the process. Norton Antivirus is a nice piece of software but I feel its a bit overweight for what most people need and I end up recommending people to buy more ram to overcome Nortons greedy need for system resources.
If you're interested in trying McAfee, I recommend getting either Internet Security or Total protection 2011 since both will protect up to 3 computers
http://home.mcafee.com/Store/Store8.aspx?
They offer a 30 day money back, so you are not out any money if you end up not liking it.
------- now a quick question about your network -------
I don't think you have mentioned it but is the pc you are having lag issues connected to your internet via cat5 wire or are you wireless all throughout your home?
Wireless interference can and will drop packets and its very noticeable with games. Not so much with general internet use and email. If you are wireless.... switch to another wireless channel or temporarily run your pc on a cat5 cable and see if the lag stops...but then again were back to pointing fingers at the internet ... LOL!

Re: Extreme lag issue
hmm ill look into it, might get my brothers to chip in a little. Ill probably get that total protection better to get the whole package i feel.
Well right now the desktop thats having the lag issue is on wireless, BUT its only about a week ago that i threw it on wireless. I had it connected to the modem in the other room using the longest ethernet cable ive ever seen lol. so right now:
One desktop is on a wired connection and its the one with the modem/router.
Lag issue desktop is on wireless
Both laptops are on wireless
Reason i switched to wireless is because we got xbox live and i dont have a wireless adapter for the xbox so i put the long ethernet cable on that.
But like i said this happened when it is wired too, so i dont think thats the issue!
On another note:
I download three of the four programs you recommended (only because ive already been using malwarebytes for a while now). and i ran all four in the order you recommended.
Stinger found one trojan
I honestly have no idea how to make sense of the log report generated by combo
Malwarebytes found nothing (same results as a day or two ago)
and all together superantispyware found 50 infected fires (trojans etc).
I also unistalled avg.
SO right now i only have no virus protection
Played about ten minutes of ut this morning, and there was no lag, BUT ten minutes isnt enough time to evaluate this since the lag sometimes doesnt happen untill an hour or so ingame. Ill log on a few hours tonight, ill go server hopping lol
Thanks again!

Yeah give the computer a good gaming workout before deciding if the problem is resolved. Finding the trojans you mentioned hopfully solved your problems.
be careful where you surf too while you have no anti-virus active.
Good Luck!

Re: Extreme lag issue
MAN! i played for about an hour and today in the middle of a run in a bt map i got it again!
I was hoping those scans did it! (although i still say they worked because they found quite a lot and got rid of it) So now what?
The only things i have not done yet are
1. Virus scan since avg somehow was corrupted
2. taken off the side of the computer and blown the dust out
3. reset the ram
Never had a problem like this before! So either its a virus or my system maybe over heating?
Got any other ideas? I'm willing to try anything not doing much else today.
Going to take apart the computer right now as i wait for a reply.
EDIT
just a thought but could it be perhaps another process that might be doing it?
like i said i dont know much about computers but im just putting it out there!

Re: Extreme lag issue
Hmmm, ok... Does it seem less frequent now?
Lets try this approach:
Download this program called Hijackthis
http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-Hi ... 27353.html
Run it and select "Do a system scan and save a logfile."
When its done it will bring up notepad with the log.
Copy the log and paste it here and Ill take a look at it.
Hopefully I can spot a malicious process we can get rid of if there are any left over.
You can close Hijackthis after you get the log posted. Dont do anything else with Hijackthis untill instructed to do so.
Meanwhile go get yourself a can of compressed air and blow out all the dust from the fans, heatsink and powersupply. Be careful not to turn the can upside down. You dont want to spray the liquid out.
Have Fun!

I don't trust the cans of air not to shoot out water. Make sure your PC is unplugged when you use the air can is all.

i would advise if you you blow out any fans stick something in the blades so they dont move the pressure from the canned air. can overspeed the cheap ones and break them so they dont spin right

Re: Extreme lag issue
Whoa sorry been busy havent had time to take apart the pc yet.....
Hopefully you all are still checking this out!
Mandrake-I have attached the file didnt even look over it, about 3am again and i need to get to bed. Thanks for all the help so far. AND the lags have happened less actually and my ping is only about 600 when it happens. maybe one of those trojans was contributing to the problem, but not the problem itself.
Herm-I always unplug the sucker and go on a hard solid floor so im grounded and dont accidentally fry anything in the system. Any other advice?
Shadow-will do thanks!
KK-I'll check it out sometime tomorrow thanks! Have to look at my different options here. Found out i actually have more money than i thought so i might just buy one.
Thanks again everyone!

Re: Extreme lag issue
Hey there BigBoss, we are still with ya. Consider this too: If you had a virus like growth just in your legs and you went in for surgery and they removed it all, while you'd be about 100% healthy again, your leg's performance would likely have deteriorated some. Maybe you'll have a limp forever or can't run at the old full speed anymore. Your PC is the same.
Sometimes, the only answer is to wipe the PC clean and start over. That is the only way to really get all of your computer's speed back. I always love how fast my PC is after a good format and reinstall of everything. Another note about that is that if you do clean it off and start over and the problem immediately appears, it is far more likely then that the issue is hardware related

Re: Extreme lag issue
I have to disagree about Mac being the best anti-virus prog. Even the online scanner, Microtrends Housecall has found stuff on my rig that McAfee overlooked.
Hijack this is a great prog if you understand your registry, but if you start guessing it can lead to rough times.
Definitely best to let the Hijack techs view your log if you aren't familiar with registry entries and editing.

Re: Extreme lag issue
well i here you herm, but can you consider this a speed issue? I've had plenty of pc's slow down before in the past and load up stuff slow, but this is different. This isnt simply my pc just slowing down i think. Then again im the newb with computers so maybe it is. BTW SB i cant understand a word on the log, but i trust mandrake enough that he probably would.
