Bad Apple there, Steve J!!

Post by a nameless entity » Fri Apr 22, 2011 12:22 am

You know, it's BS like this that is pushing me more and more to consider going offline. And that's just for starters. I may end up cutting up my charge cards, or just paying cash for most purchases, and only using them for a few things where cash is impractical.

I never really planned to buy any product like this, and certainly won't now.

Hahahaha! This funny to me because at this point people should have just figured it was going to track them. I don't think the #3 version does this but I bet there is a app that will enable it already. There are good reasons for this tracking of people like to find you in a snow storm or something I guess. I'm not concerned about the gov watching me and yes, they and the credit card companies are watching very closely your use and location of use of credit cards. They have been for over 30 years easily.

What makes it funny to me is all of the firefox users who don't trust IE for internet privacy reasons and I'm pretty sure most of them were the ones in line to get the new iphone. You will always be tracked and there is nothing you can do about it. I hear there is a app in Canada that blocks it on the iphone.

When they (Apple, and all the others) aren't up front about it, people aren't going to think about it. They're too busy learning and using the new technology.

Spying on people is morally wrong. It always was, is now, and forever will be. The sneakier the technology, the worse the offense.

We need strong enforceable laws in place to put a stop this kind of practice.

I know that I will still be tracked to some degree, but walking away from these technologies as much as I can is all I can do. And as I've said before, I'm getting closer and closer to doing just that.

I am sick to death of all the crap my anti virus and anti spyware programs are constantly finding on my PC. And it's not like I go to any risky sites, because I don't. We are under attack on so many levels these days, and I am tired of fending off the cyber scum just so I can go online and complain about it.

I am with Herm on this. I do not care if people/companies are tracking me. From things you buy (credit card companies, stores, manufacturers), where you go, etc.. It is part of life now days.

I understand Hook's view point and I respect his view point and agree about the junk that people and companies put out there on the internet. I dislike all the popups that you get when you go to legit websites for news.

Well my 19" Nec CRT monitor just bit the dust tonight, after warning me for a few weeks that it was not feeling well. (The whole screen would turn black with just a white line across the screen 1" from the top) So I'm back on the 17" Dell that came with this PC. It's ok, but was always a bit contrasty. The brights give me a headache.

So what was I doing about it? Why, looking at the flyer from Staples and wondering if that 23" flat screen Samsung model #2428P on sale for $150 bucks is any good, and if I'll need to update my video drivers to run it.

what is your current PC again? I'm on a 20" Sony CRT. It is starting to make me mad at how big it is and how much space it takes. I feel a flat screen is on the way for me too.

I'm still running that Dell 8200 I bought in late 2002. It's on its 3rd video card. I put in a better power supply too. The NEC 19" monitor was a refurb, so I guess I'm lucky it lasted nearly 7 years. I still have a Dell branded 20" Sony trinitron CRT myself. It took up ALL of the space on this desk. The 19" left me a little room, and this 17" CRT leaves me still more. But a flat screen that fits underneath the hutch on this desk would be awesome.

BTW, just be sure to get someone to help you shift that 20" monitor. OMG it was so heavy. :o

I've been doing a little preliminary research on flat screens, and I'm learning that the so called TN types are inferior to the other types (PVA, sPVA, cPVA) for the most part. Whether or not I would really care is another thing though. What I need is a monitor that will render photographs reasonably faithfully, and not exhibit any ghosting while I'm playing UT. My budget is low. 150-200 bucks or so. That Samsung on sale for $80 off at Staples sold out immediately.

The blurb for an LG W2340V 23" monitor at Best Buy's website claims that model is good for gaming. It was listed for $219 up here. I need to go look see, and measure up the hutch on this desk so I know exactly what will fit underneath it.

So much for walking away from the internet. :?

True - some changes needed for sure though.

Hey, my monitor gave out also, after 11+ years a faithful service. :(
A while ago my wife bought an HD 20" flat screen TV that we didn't use.
Bingo, hooked it up and it works "pretty good". (for now)

Awesome! Good for you. Wait! You had already told me about that work around on the phone or that you had that extra one on hand right. Glad it is working.

Yep, I did tell you that on the phone.
It isn't the best as it isn't real hi-res, but it does OK.
UT looks real good on it so that is what is most important LOL.

Good enough until we get a new comp.

Well, it seems that the decision has been made for me. After spending quite a few hours online researching monitors here and there over the last few days, the whole question of which one to buy became moot. My PC died yesterday afternoon. The screen went black suddenly, and it will not reboot.

It's either the video card (strongly suspected), the mother board, or the hard drive, maybe.
I don't think it's the hdd, but the machine will not boot up any more and I'm sure the monitor is ok. Maybe the old monitor was ok too, but I think it was getting tired also.

As money is always an object, and I'd rather buy a new PC than repair that old heap, this makes the decision easy. I'll go offline for at least a while, until I know that my finances can handle a new system. I greatly prefer more rather than less in a PC, so I will need to watch the deals out there on a near top of the line rig.

So it's good bye (for now at least) to everyone, and especially to you Hermskii.
Thanks for all the fun over the years at MHM and CG. It was a blast. 8)

p.s. But don't worry, I will check in from time to time on a PC at the library, which is where I am posting from today. ;)
