Screen freeze, can't move, then crash..

Post by David » Mon May 16, 2011 4:51 pm

OK, every once and a while, I will have an issue. The issue happens when I have the high ground.

As an example, I will get the highest ground as possible and then look down. During time, you can see the graphics glitch a little and then it freezes or I can no longer move. I will have to control, alt, delete to shut down UT and then go back into UT. If I do not control, alt, delete to get out, I can not move and sooner or later UT will crash. It seems to happen when I am looking down at the map. It will sometimes do it even before the game start. Such as I enter the map and I search the map while other players are entering, if I go high, it has a good chance to freeze....

What I have for my system, is what I have built.

Any ideas?

Not sure of your specific problem.
But, one thing, when you are playing in a map in a UT game, the higher you go generally, the more graphics are involved and needed to be rendered.
I have crashed my UT game on occasion when I was real high in the air looking down over large maps or maps with a lot of things, polys or graphics in them.

Makes no sense to me at all. Is it n the server? In a practice game on your PC? Both? Certain maps? All maps? Need more info like that. Don't say both and both. LOL

I have played on multiple servers, sniper and deemer and it freezes (not all the time). I have not tried during a practice match..Nothing else on my computer freezes, just the game.

As Hook and Herm would say...Ditto.

When I play on Hook's server and I have a player like SB, I need to get to the high ground, but that sometimes gets me into trouble due to the freezing and becomes non responsive.

Concerning the map question, any map that you can get really above everything else..Like I said before, it is not every time..

I cleaned out my computer (dust wise from the fans and such), I guess I will see if it was an overheating issue due to the load on the graphics mixture with the dust..

Which UT rendering device are you using? D3D or OpenGL?
If you're using the D3D that comes with UT v436 you should consider upgrading to a newer driver:
http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/

I took a look at your card specs and it should support DirectX 10 (even though WindowsXP may not support it). Try installing the D3D9 renderer from that website and see if it helps.

Don't forget to check also this detailed description about the custom settings:
http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/settings.html

This thread is useful also, even though I do not agree with certain tweaks they have made (like disabling VSync and enabling Volumetric Lighting):
http://www.ut99.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=373&start=0

Finally this one is old, but a few things are still of interest:
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=160250

Whatever... If you have the chance, do NOT use the original UT D3D (d3d7) cause it bugs like hell. I've been stuck with that crap for years cause my old laptop got a puny ATI Mobility M6 card which does support only D3D7 and OpenGL 1.3

P.S. I see your card does support only OpenGL 2.0, so forget about using the new OpenGL renderers, but the one that comes with UT should work I think:

P.P.S. AMD multicore processors + UT = you're looking for troubles

POTS thank you.

I did download and install the Direct3D9. I then followed the instruction how to select it for my options on UT and then went to the last map that I had issues on and it did not freeze or lock up on me. I will continue to use this setting and see what happens. Thanks.

Concerning the AMD dual core and UT......I had to download an AMD Dual Core Optimizer for UT to work... I have not had issues with that, at least that I know of.

OK...issue.....When I used the Direct3D9 setting, I was able to play without freezing. Now, 2 out of 3 times when I try to start UT the game will not start correctly and I get an error.
error.JPG
Now if I switch it back to standard D3D setting, the game loads fine....So I am sort of back to step 1.

Without re-reading his post, I'll ask that you try one of the OpenGL renderers. If he doesn't list one, let me know. I'll send the directions. Note they are already in my how to guide at www.Hermskii.com

That is an awesome find! Where did come about finding this? Correct me if I'm wrong but with that patch wouldn't XP users then be able to install Internet Explorer 9 too? IE9 is sooooo much better than IE8. This would also possibly make certain video cards work on XP that normally would not have been able to I think. AND you could play games to that XP would not have allowed beofre maybe!

Awesome find. Thanks Shadow Knight!

Who are the people that made this patch and where are they from? (Their English is atrocious.)
As XP is still supported by Microsoft, is it wise to fool around with your O/S?

Of course at some point in the future, once XP is an abandoned O/S the same as Win 98SE, it might be understandable to go with something like this if you were desperate enough. :|
