Funny/Stupid moments

I was at work. During this day at work, a person came in wanting a release on an item that my employer has a hold on it. To get the release they need to provide paperwork. On mandatory form showed it expired on 04/17/11. I then informed the person of this and she looked at me and said so....... I then informed her that it was expired and then she said it was not 2011 yet. I had to inform her that it was 2011.

She later asked me if I was born here (within the city that I am working in) and I told her no. She asked me where I was from and I told her that I was a nomad. She asked what a nomad was. I then had to explain this to her.

At the end of our conversation, she told me that she has thought of herself as an intellectual person...

Just a couple of days ago I was very sick. I was also going through bills. Lots of bills. I had found a pile of paper work that I had packed up when we moved last year and was going through it. One bill was past due for June of 2010. At that moment in time, I was so sick I could not recall if it was 2010 or 2011 so I got up and had to look at my PC time and date to confirm. Yeah. I was in pretty bad shape but I've been feeling better each day since that day I came across the bill. I caught a very nasty head cold about 10 days ago.

While I never went to university I always considered myself rather well informed, if not well educated. I got into that comfy frame of mind because I didn't watch sports, I only used to watch science and arts programs on TV. I also read my father's copies of "The Economist" when he was done with them, and magazines like Canadian Geographic, a Canadian history magazine called "The Beaver", and National Geographic. My only "non intellectual" magazines were my motorcycle subscriptions.

Then I went back to school after the manufacturing plant I worked in closed suddenly. I studied things I'd never looked at before, and had my face rubbed in my own ignorance good and proper. Perhaps that woman has had a similar experience. And sometimes I find it hard to remember that it's the 21st century now, not the 20th.

I still like to think I'm rather well informed, but am now much more aware of the depth and breadth of my own ignorance.

That last sentence you wrote was awesome. Was that really from you or did you get it somewhere? It sounds familiar.

I consider myself to be pretty smart but I am also pretty much hard wired in my ways and opinions about the majority of things I've have faced and will face. I do however like when I can step outside of myself and make or see a change in myself that I know is not my normal behavior and and also the proper thing to do.

I'm hopeful to get to enjoy this very much when I finally realize that the beer and smokes are really stupid for me to partake in. Peace.

I like to think it is mine. I probably absorbed the essence of that thought somewhere along the line in the past, but I have since made it mine.

Yes it is all too easy to fall back into the "hard wired" thought patterns of youth. It's quite a struggle isn't it? All you can do is keep working on it, and gradually you get there. Sometimes it's called "mellowing with age", but it's really just the last stages of finally growing up.

And please do quit smoking. I've told in here before about the friends and acquaintances that I grew up with who have since passed on far too early due to the evil weed.

There is also the practical aspect. One of the ways a federal government balances its budget is to download costs to the lower levels of government. So expect to see the state and county levels to get to do the dirty work of raising taxes. So sin taxes have nowhere to go but up. eg. a pack of smokes up here is at least $7 now. The last time I checked a few years ago, a 2 oz packet of pipe tobacco was $13. A case of beer ranges from around $29 for the cheap stuff, to at least $36 for the normal stuff, and the upper atmosphere for the premium stuff.
