I doubt we all started with Unreal

The very first 1st person shooter I can recall was Wolfenstein. At least it was the first one I ever played. There were a bunch of games that followed it, in essentially the same format, but Wolfenstein was the first for me...and I mean classic Wolfenstein that came out in the early 1990's too. I never played the followup.

We're all hooked on UT99, or else we wouldn't be here. I'm just curious what other ones led us all to this place, figuratively speaking.

1st person shooters I played prior to UT99:
- Wolfenstein
- Blake Stone
- Hexen
- Doom

Okay, so I didn't play a lot.

What 1st person shooters did you play before you found UT99?

I wish I could recall what got me going way back then. I know it was around 1996 or 1997 that I really started in on playing with computer games. I can see the game I played in my head but don't recall the name. I think it was some game related to or just before Hereitic

I think I then stated playing WarLords II then Warlords III. I then found one of the original good first person shooters and played it some. I moved on to a couple of the Star trek PC games. I also played a little remote control car race game called Revolt that was totally awesome and I still have all of these by the way except the first two.

Finally a soon to be new member here called KMC showed me this game. That was it for me. I had not played any games in a long time prior to him showing me UT. He is shocked I still play it too!

Oh, I've played a bucketload of other types of arcade games prior to UT99 but I was angling more for 1st person shooters here.

I have Star Trek Voyager, the 1st person shooter but that was afterwards...

Well to be honest, Unreal was the very first game that was absolutely perfect.
Gameplay, sounds, music, levels, and the ofcourse the engine were fantastic. A complete new world was opened for me! So I don't doubt that we all started with Unreal, because it is the grandpa of all good games.

Yup, I played the original Unreal on dial up and loved it, was a teenager then and liked Girls and Taekwondo more then video games but I did play this alot, as well as Duke Nukem 3d and my first FPS was probably Blake Stone then Ultima Online 3d The Stygian Abyss and of course Doom. Herectic, Hexen and everything in between.

I know I started young so I can't remember all the games I played before Unreal. I know I took the "time travel" route, getting Unreal and UT through buying the anthology. Because I'd been playing UT2004 since I was ten, everything in Unreal had a strange feeling of heritage.

Well, - First game for me was the new one back then called "Asteroids" - what a gas!
I started in this game with UT99 demo.
I then received the whole game for Xmas of 1999.

You mean the original arcade game asteroids? I have that game and about another 100 of them now. I can play them all on my PC still. Fun. You name it and if it was popular, I have it.

Yes, the old arcade version and on the comps I have had.

Hey, check out the Arcade on my HUTP forums!
They have a lot of games.
I can add hundreds more - even Asteroids.

It is a forum mod that comes with my forum.

Yea those arcade games were the bomb back when in HS! I tried playing them one the comp with MAME or whatever it's called?, but with out a big spin ball controller... * sighs , not the same lol . One that I liked was the one where you spun around in a map or shape and shot the spikes as they came up at you ? and a tank game too comes to mind that rawked as well.

Does anyone remember a game called Star Castle. You had to fly aroud and shoot of this shape that was fixed in the middle of the screen. It had shields. There were also little stars mines that followed you around and killed you if you touched them. It ruled.
