The tweakers do the changes. Reboot to use the changes.
The BT tool is quick and does not offer many settings. You just choose which net device and hit next if you are happy with the default.
Run it a second time to undo the changes.
I usually try this 1 first.
The info shown on the
http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php should tell you what it thinks you should do, by suggesting some recommended values.
Their optimiser tool has a slider you set to the speed you expect to get.

It may be wise to set it low to 2 or 4 Mb.
Click on the "optimal" gadget to see the new settings.
The "MTU/Latency" tab will let you do some ping tests to see your average latency.
It also provides a calculator to use the info from tests.
You can use the tool and site to fine-tune with the custom mode.
NOTE TO EVERYONE: Modern OSs have something called "Nagle’s Algorithm".
This is supposed to combine small packets into bigger ones to send. It causes havoc with most games, and should be disabled.
SG TCP Optimizer has a section in the advanced tab. you can see if it is on or off. Using the "Optimal" setting will disable it for you.
The problem is, until you can use an ethernet cable to get setup first, all we are doing is testing your Wifi.
The windows tray icon is useless. If your Wifi has it's own GUI software, look to see if it shows 2 bars.
1 for signal strength, and the other for signal quality.
It is possible to have 100% signal and 50% quality (just like mobile phones).
LAN Lights is a nice small alternative to the windows tray icon, and will show lots of info.

Xirrus WiFi Inspector hits every geeky button I have, and shows info in very easy to see graphs and charts (I think I may reinstall this now!).
