XP has it's own fire wall installed. MSconfig that sht and make sure your startup doesn't include stuff you don't want.

You really don't need a protection program hogging resources if you use Firefox.

Windows XP's firewall was not on when I installed UT the first time....I checked that right away to turn it OFF, but since it was already off, I turned it on, it obviously not being the culprit....I dont use Firefox......as far as what loads when I turn on comp. (start programs) - I do turn off everything in the background except my Zone Alarm firewall....firewall shouldnt be the issue..besides, I won't do anything online without firewall on.....I'll turn firewall off just for shits & grins to see if it works, but I doubt it.....

thank you man

Funny, that my previous comp. that only had 250 MB's of RAM, and was only a 600 MHz CPU, that it got along so well with UT.....I still have it sitting on the floor here in my room.....I'm leering at it hungrily....I could play UT on it.....mmm.....Anyway, back to reality - oh ya, reality sucks, cuz Ic ant play UT...no, I dont love UT that much, that i'll play the bots in UT offline.....I'll be playin my badass Mafia game (PC only) - has a 3D Generator ..set in the early 30's to the mid 40's....excellent game/very recommended....

Condemned to the Forum,

This isn't a 'new' computer, bought anywhere ok...it's more or less a 'Frankenstein', with new guts....(shiny CPU cover) -- my nephew's wife made this comp. for me, and bless her friggin heart and everything, but if i cant play UT online dammit, i'll.....i'll.....i'll be chained to the floor of this forum forever, dude....I'm sure there's plenty of whiners out there that love to see me down, but like Terminator said - 'I'll be baaaaaaahk !'

My friend had the fire wall protection on before , and it stopped him from playing online. Packets must travel both ways to play online. Are you going through a router?

But from the sound of it your computer is got more wrong with it then just a fire wall.

But if it is something else wrong , turning the wall back on is just going to make the real problem invisible.

There really is no reason to use firewall unless your using a crappy browser. Nobody can hack you through UT.

edit:
Computer builds and drunkenness don't produce good results.

Ya, usign a router for another comp. in the house, but my comp. is the one getting the direct signal from our DSL....the router was always there before when i played with the previous comp., so i can't see how that can be the culprit....

thanx

I use nothing but Firefox. "blocks pretty much everything"
I use no firewall , and no virus protection.
I don't visit heavily commercialized, exploited, or pron sites.
I never install anything that i dont know what it is and what it will do.
I have NO programs running in my systrey. "beautifullness"
I don't open strange emails.
I scan once a month for add/spyware and find nothing.
I scan once a month for viruses and find nothing.

I run through a router that has ports open for what i need. I have no stress.
And my systems resources are not waisted on BS.
:D

? you said somebody made this comp and at times it reboots did they by chance use an old power supply with new parts cause it sounds like a cross between overheating and not enough juice to run everything
just a thought

I'm gonna do what Meat suggested - re-install BOTH CD's for UT - I have the GOTY edition.......AND, get the patch for 436 version....Mine's 432, but have never had a problem playing with my old computer.....will re-install with both CD's, then get patch for 436.....If that don't do it, then I'll be SOL instead of SOD.... :x
