Should my graphics card be able to run open gl?

Post by BiGbOsS » Sun Apr 13, 2008 5:20 pm

Hey guys, my ut keeps freezing everytime i start to play it, and im reinstalling my ut, right now im running d3d8, but some people on another server were telling me that my graphics card should be able to run open gl.

I have a nvidia geforce 6200, and i also heard that open gl should be able to run on all nvidia cards.

Whenever i run open gl (on ut) my screen gets all blurry and freezes and restarts my computer, then ut says there was a problem with the graphics blah blah blah.

So is my card supposed to be able to run it, and if it is, then wat exactly is my problem? :?

*EDIT*

okay so i reninstalled ut and i went to the beyond unreal forums and looked at that one post by that mad scientisit guy (LOL this one http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=160250)
I downloaded the open gl file and tried it, ut forze on startup, then i messed with the settings, nothing worked :?
I still cant get them to work, and he some how got his to work with a 5200 nvidia card  lol maybe i should post there...... :?

Yes

Yes, that card can easily run OpenGlL. EASILY I said. You must have something set wrong I'm guessing. Tell me; are you going to OpenGL so that you can try the S3TC textures? What happens when you play UT using Direct3D as your renderer? If not, try this. It is straight from my how to manual that nobody ever uses apparently:

How to use the OpenGL Renderer:
(Print these instructions if you can)

OpenGL is a rendering method your video card may be able to use to give you slightly better graphics in the game. Most semi modern cards can or do have this ability. It may be to your advantage to try the UT in this mode. If you want to give it a shot, just follow the directions below.

1. Go to your C:\UnrealTournament\System folder.
2. Rename the file called OpenGLDrv.dll to OpenGLDrvOriginal.dll
3. Go to this link and download this zip file to your computer:

http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/utglr28.zip

4. Unzip the file and copy the OpenGLDrv.dll to your C:\UnrealTournament\System folder.
5. Start the game and from the UT Desktop select options.
6. Select Preferences.
7. On the Video tab, select the Video Driver "Change" button.
8. A “Change Video Driver” option window will open. Select “Yes”.
9. The “Unreal Tournament Video Configuration” window will open.
10. Click the radius for “Show all devices”.
11. Highlight “OpenGL Support”.
12. Select “Next”.
13. Select “Next” again.
14. Select “Run”.
Done!

OK. So there you have way to install and use OpenGL Boss. Let us know how it goes. Go get my manual and see:

Chapter Four

“Tweaks for Your UT Player Installation”
for more about using OpenGL and using the high res textures too if you dare.

OK so i did what you said hermskii and it didnt work, so then i reinstalled ut again and repeated your process and it still didnt work, here this could explain a little better this is what i get when i start up ut:
Image

The screen starts out all black, and then for the city map intro i get the above picture, and when i hit esc, nothing happens, i can hear sound and the music, so its definitely a problem with my graphics, d3d8 works, but ive been told i can do much better with the open gl.

And i feel embarrassed, i have a copy of your manual on my desktop!  from now on i will look there first then post lol 8)

Okay with reg d3d, it works for a while here let me describe it:

1.Okay so i went into preferences and changed it from software to D3D(not d3d8)
2. I then realized that since this was a new install, i had to search for servers, so i searched for MEAT's
3. I found it and i had to recieve a map, the redirect was working, but me being a lazy teen decided to say "screw it im going to start a practice session"
4. As soon as i clicked on practice session, the screen froze, and i had to restart my computer.... :?

I recall all this before, to tell you the truth d3d8 and software rendering are the only ones that have ever worked for me, im 90% sure d3d8 will work again (i dont see why not) but its been a long day and i need to get some zzzzz's lol

so should i try d3d8 tomorrow? or do u have a better idea Herm?

this is odd u say ur game scews up on D3D wat u could try is goin into ur Nvidia Control center (should be on right click menu) then look through the settings should see somwere were u can change the renderer choose OpenGL. thats how i have to do it anyway (with my ATI) but OpenGL kinda sucks its way too dark. try downloading some D3D UT drivers i remember u doin it before and it worked. and if u get a new card get a Radeon more reliable XD

Try

Post by Hermskii » Wed Apr 16, 2008 10:41 pm

Try it. D3D isn't that bad at all and a lot less flakey than OpenGL. I have also seen a screen like your before and it was always because of the renderer. Last time I saw that I tried default UT OPenGL on a Voodoo 3000 AGP card I had. I got the screen you pictured. I put it back to Glide which was offered back then as a renderer for Voodoo cards only and I was in heaven. Direct 3 D (D3D) is fine to use. See my manaual. Start at chapter one. Install a default install of UT and tell us if you actually still have the issue.

Do you have the latest D3D version drivers?
Make sure that when you install UT that you do NOT install the D3D drivers from the UT disc!!!
They load by default - you must UN-Check it so it does not load/install!
Those are WAY old drivers!
That is a mistake I have seen many do!
I believe that the drivers for D3D are higher than 8 now - maybe I'm wrong but I could have sworn I DL'd D3D9.? awhile back!
Even my Old card (Nvidea RIVA TNT2 Pro 32mb) from 2000 runs both D3D and OpenGL great!

Of course UT99 was almost built to run on my card.

Hmm d3d9 is working good, but every few minutes i get this lag that just stops my whole ut, and the lag is only for a second or two, and then its all normal again.
any thoughts on what this problem may be?

NOTE*
This is on every server i play on, no specific one!
